 2007 Trail Of Tears Rendezvous

The 2nd Annual Trail of Tears Rendezvous brought participants to Sikeston, Missouri, on August 31-September 2, 2007, for an all-Pontiac car show and drag racing. Friday evening featured test-and-tune, Saturday offered bracket racing to all makes and models, and Sunday featured Pontiac-only strip action.

Larry Cooper, promoter of Trail of Tears Rendezvous, told HPP, "Drag racing is a safe way to learn how to handle a car, work on a car, and it's a family and friend sport. It's amazing that very little drinking, bad language, or bad sportsmanship occurs. Friends are quickly made at these Pontiac events."

Cooper also said that the Trail of Tears Rendezvous helped promote the future of drag racing. Kat Steele, 17; Brianna Denman, 16; Ryan Steele, 16 (all his grandchildren); and James Tripp, 15 (a close friend of the family), took their first trips down the dragstrip, and Lora Cooper raced a G-5 Pontiac. "These young people are the future of drag racing," Cooper said. "Although none of these young people won, it was an experience that will be with them forever."

Cecil Whitaker was the lucky raffle winner of the event. He drove away with a new Pontiac G5, with profits given to Drag Racing Association of Women (DRAW), an organization that helps injured drag racers.

The third Trail of Tears Rendezvous Drag Race and Car Show is scheduled for August 29-31, 2008 (Labor Day weekend). According to Cooper, "This year, the race will be bigger and better."
