Another impressive Trans Am...
Another impressive Trans Am belongs to David Childress, who drove it from his home in Glen Allen, Virginia, and captured the LSX True Street "King of Memphis" crown on Saturday. Then he detailed the car and entered it in the car show so he could watch the races on Sunday. When he returned, he collected several show n' shine awards to go with his six-foot tall "King of Memphis" trophy to keep him smiling on his drive home to Virginia.
More drama happened in the Drag Radial Class, which contained the quickest LSX vehicles on the property. Steve Turley from Huber Heights, Ohio, was the fastest qualifier, with an impressive 7.795 at 181.25 in his 402 CID LSX-powered '98 Camaro. Pontiac hopes were pinned on: The number-three qualifier, Wade Stevens, all the way down from Pickering, Ontario, Canada, with his '98 402 LSX Firebird; and the number-five qualifier, Mike Brown. Apart from a "transplant" LS-powered Buick Grand National trailing the rest of the field, all other Drag Radial entries were Chevrolets. Despite the odds, Wade, in his sinister-looking black Firebird continued to "wade" through the field into the semi-finals.
Unfortunately for Mike, he ran a quicker 7.960 e.t. but was eliminated by Tom Kempf in his patchwork Camaro (sporting mismatched right-side body panels from a last-minute crash repair) by a 0.208 quicker reaction time, making up the margin to his 8.044 e.t. Finding better traction, it was Tom again who eliminated Wade's Firebird in the semi-finals with the quickest and fastest run of the day: a 7.820 at 186.00 mph, advancing Tom's colorful Camaro against the Turbo 427 LSX '01 Corvette of Dyno Shootout winner Paul in the finals, where Tom took the win.
Overall, the enthusiasm and great showing of LSX fans, racers, and vendors made this LSX Shootout an unqualified success and, although the NMCA is still awaiting official announcement of the sponsorship of the '08 LSX Shootout, everyone agrees that there will be more fireworks at the Memphis Motorsports Park for the LSX community on October 9-12, 2008.
