It's hard to imagine, but this pristine beauty was resting beneath several years of dust. It's amazing to think that there are such truly original cars like this one stashed away in storage somewhere. The restoration process can be enjoyable as owner Craig Gibney told us that he's made a lot of new friends and met a lot of people in the hobby who have helped him.

One very interesting aspect of this GTO is its painted white top. Not many GTOs were ordered this way, most opting for the Cordova covering when a two-tone effect was desired. This '64 also features optional Custom Wheel Discs (order Code 521).

1964 Pontiac GTO Engine View
The 79J engine code specified the 325hp 389 motor, which included a four-barrel carburetor and 10.75:1 compression ratio. Anything under 100,000 miles is rather low for a Pontiac of '64 vintage, and with only 71K logged on the odometer, this GTO is still fresh. To that end, its engine has been detailed but not rebuilt.

Detailing in the engine compartment is Concours Gold quality according to the GTOAA, so get out your notebooks, '64 GTO owners. Craig also wants to thank John Short at Surface Finish Technology in Elmira, NY, for the plating work.

Its original Parchment Morrokide upholstery was in great shape, but the skins were dyed to bring back the color. Note the lack of a floor console and shifter. The Super Turbine 300 two-speed automatic gearbox is shifted on the column, another oddity for GTOs. Other interior options include the courtesy lamp (Code 491), push-button AM radio (Code 392), Separa-phonic rear speaker (Code 401), and front seatbelts (Code 411).

The underside of the differential had green and yellow paint marks, which, on early cars, helped to identify the rear gear and the presence or lack of Safe-T-Track. Craig pointed out the paint marks do not overlap; the yellow stops where the green begins. There is also a light-blue paint mark on the axle tube.

Along with the details of the front of the engine and the front suspension, although difficult, you can see the paint markings on the driveshaft--two yellow and one pink. The pink is on top of the rear yellow according to Craig.

Craig deviated from stock with the body bushings using new polyurethane pieces. He did, however, disguise them by removing the edges so that they looked like factory rubber. He even made up a jig to facilitate the process.

Some body color overspray is visible on the black surface of the underside of the hood. However, there are areas that did not get overspray because the factory hangers that held the hood were in the way. Here, though tough to see, Craig was re-creating that scenario using a piece of wood to double as the factory hanger.

This is the original carpet. Craig used masking tape to highlight where slits were made to fasten the seats, "T"-shaped for the rear and slotted for the front. Gibney says the slits in the upper, left corner were for the emergency brake cable and speedo cable. Tape at the sides (on the floor) shows the amount of overlap. The rectangular open areas under the seat were void of carpet, and the extension that connects the front and rear carpet located between the seat and doorsills were pieces of carpet taped to the main piece. Craig also noted that two different-length seatbelt bolts were used. Those at the trans tunnel had a longer shank to accommodate the thicker insulation.
