1968 Pontiac Firebird Engine View
Chris reflects on his motor from an international perspective, "The engine is a bit of a mystery. I found an ad for a '67 Firebird convertible--it was a 400ci auto car that had been hit down one side. Most of it had been parted already, but the 400 fired right up and sounded great. As it ran well, I just threw a new roller timing chain on it, painted it, and put it in the coupe. I have no idea what the cam is, but I can say it pulls really hard at 5,500 rpm. I need a more stout bottom end to let this thing rev!"

The original sheetmetal was too far gone, so new GM front fenders, repro doorskins, quarter-skins, wheelhouses, and trunk-to-quarter filler panels were picked up from Classic Industries. Other body panels such as the hood, taillight panel, and trunk floor were yanked from a donor '67 convertible. All original? No. Numbers matching? Nah. Documented history? Please! Smashing good fun? You betcha!

Chris is delighted to share his inspiration, "Helping tear the Bird down to the framerails was a low point for me. It didn't even look like a car anymore and I really wondered what I had gotten into. A great way to renew the enthusiasm was looking at pics of finished cars, on the Internet, in magazines, in books and in the summer car shows." Makes you wanna get a '68 Bird of your own, doesn't it?

The second time around an ACC carpet kit, Corbeau GTS II bucket seats, and a regular Firebird rear bench seat were installed. Reminding occupants of the breed of muscle they were flying in, a Pontiac logo'd horn button center cap was placed on the custom Pilot steering wheel.

1968 Pontiac Firebird Plate
As there were no VIN or cowl tags, except for this plate, we have no clue how many '68 Firebirds were built in Belgium. We are all curious to find out more on the Antwerp GM assembly plant and what other Pontiacs were built there. Anyone out there who knows something can E-mail HPP (jesse.freeman@primedia.com).

The Line-Loc button on the shifter was not originally installed for racing but rather for parking on steep hills and backroad burnouts. Note the five-speed pattern on the ball.

The following photos will provide insight into how far Chris Halls' Firebird has come...and we don't mean miles traveled.

A major setback was a fire in the garage that destroyed quite few parts and damaged the interior and rear of the Bird. Chris tells us, "It was painted in the fall of 1999 and during the New Year's Holiday. Early in 2000 there was a fire in the loading bay at work. The car was badly burned in the back end and all the good parts went up in smoke too. After the fire, the front end was torn down again to repaint the engine and fix all the corrosive smoke damage, which had rusted almost everything."
