In 1995, former HPP editor R. George Ellis, together with the late Werner Pfister and the author, reunited the original Car and Driver ’64 Royal Bobcat GTO with a genuine ’64 Ferrari GTO at Lime Rock. Kit Foster from Special Interest Autos (now Hemmings Classic Cars) was also there, as was then-GTOAA president Stan Rarden and former Pontiac ad executive Jim Wangers. Even though the GTO was set up for drag racing, it was still used, as it was the very car from the Mar. ’64 issue. The results were predictable—the Pontiac was a rocket on the straightaways, while the Ferrari went around the corners like it was on rails. The sound of that 421 and the V-12 duking it out is something we will never forget.
