1974 Pontiac GTO - Swan Song

A Historic Look At The Stepchild Of The First GTO Era-The '74 Goat

The GTO shared its honeycomb mesh grille with other '74 Ventura models. But the GTO received a specific grille treatment that housed the front parking lamps, which were otherwise located in the bumper openings. Left silver on others, the honeycomb area was painted black with silver surrounds on the GTO.

1974 Pontiac Gto Rear
Other than the decal on the trunk lid, from this view nothing immediately separates the GTO from a standard Ventura. It did receive a 0.562-inch-thick rear stabilizer bar along with stiffer shocks at each corner. Factory literature states that a 2.73 gear ratio was used in conjunction with an automatic transmission. But it appears the '74 GTO received a 3.08 gearset. In addition, Rally IIs less trim rings were the only wheels available on the GTO. Although the trim rings were not included, they were still optional. UPC P06 appears on the buildsheet or factory-to-dealer invoice on cars ordered with this option.
1974 Pontiac Gto Scoop
Unique to the '74 GTO was a functional Trans Am-style Shaker scoop that allowed the engine to draw cooler air from the base of the windshield under full-throttle conditions. Although it was last functional on the Trans Am during the '72 model year, operation was restored for the GTO in 1974.
1974 Pontiac Gto Engine
Under the GTO's hood was a 200hp, 350ci engine that was capable of running a standing quarter-mile in the mid-to-high 15s at a speed around 88 mph. While not staggering by today's performance standards, consider that just a year later, a 455-powered Trans Am offered the same horsepower and was producing performance numbers similar to those from the 350-powered GTO.
