1977 Pontiac Trans Am Bandit Edition Front
Here is Prototype 1 that was featured in Hot Rod magazine. It has a 0.030 over 455 Pontiac engine, a five-speed Tremec trans, and retains its stock subframe and suspension configuration. It has been outfitted with upgraded Hotchkis handling components, however. The car was not road ready when we were at YearOne, since all attention had been shifted to the BAN III car that is featured in this story, hence the in-the-bay photo.

It was built by Hi Tech Engine in Texas and features Edelbrock heads, a hydraulic roller cam (specs not available), an Eagle crank and rods, and forged pistons. The ignition is MSD, and the exhaust is handled by 2-inch primary Hooker headers. A serpentine-belt system is from March Performance.

The BAN III prototype features a GMPP LS7 motor replete with its dry-sump oiling system using a YearOne-modified tank (lower left). A hotter cam and free-flowing exhaust bumps power to 605 at the crank. The custom air cleaner fitted with a K&N filter was made so that the Shaker hood could be retained. A Vintage Air A/C system keeps the passengers cool, while a big Be Cool aluminum radiator with dual electric fans keeps the LS7's temperature in check.
