Underside
The heavy-duty suspension, frame, and braking system were restored to stock with N.O.S. parts or reproductions. The factory 14x6-inch 8-Lug wheels, shod in P225-75R14 BFGoodrich radials, provide better handling than the original bias-ply rubber.
In The Bay
The 2+2's 421 H.O. with 376 hp was the top performing engine option for this model in 1966. When Steve acquired the Pontiac, however, it didn't have the original cylinder heads or intake manifold. Instead it was fitted with 092 heads, a Weiand intake, and a Holley four-barrel. To return the 2+2 to stock and increase power, he replaced them with a date-code-correct Tri-Power system and 093 heads (1.92/1.66-inch valves), sourced from Barry Martin of Sonic Motors. He had them installed during a stock rebuild of the four-bolt main, cast bottom end engine (cleaned up with an 0.030 overbore) at Huelsman Automotive in Chickasaw, Ohio. Factory "long branch" cast-iron exhaust manifolds feed into an upgraded 2.5-inch dual exhaust. The straight-through mufflers and factory resonators provide a muscular tone wherever this Pontiac cruises.
Multiple 421 badges are placed...
Multiple 421 badges are placed around the 2+2 to let everyone know what's under the hood.
A short-tail stick transmission from a '62 or '63 and a modified crossmember found their way under the 2+2 while with a previous owner; they were accompanied by a longer driveshaft. These were replaced with a Raybestos heavy-duty clutch and the appropriate '66 M20 four-speed transmission with a long tailshaft for a full-size Pontiac. A correct crossmember and driveshaft were also installed. Out back is a 12-bolt rearend with 3.73 gears and a Safe-T-Track.
The End
It's great to see that a rare and unusual Pontiac such as this was painstakingly restored. Steve's 2+2 is a huge hit (pun intended) at local car shows and receives its share of compliments and accolades at national events. In 2007, it won Second in Class at the Ames Performance Pontiac Nationals and took Best In Show at the Minster Octoberfest Annual Car Show, but it's not the only Pontiac in the Heitbrink family stable. They also have two '79 Trans Ams-a WS-6 and a 10th Anniversary edition. His wife, Sharon, drives a '92 Firebird convertible during the summer, too. "My wife of 36 years has been extremely patient with me," he tells HPP. "I've restored several cars and she has let me do it." It does come at a price, however. He jokes that he manages to be assigned most of the chores around the house because of it.
Steve left no stone unturned...
Steve left no stone unturned on his restoration. Each emblem was replaced with N.O.S. or reproductions.
Pontiac built the 2+2 in small numbers, adding to its appeal. This full-size musclecar combined style, size, and performance in a cohesive package: It's a unique alternative to a GTO or Firebird. Steve will continue to drive and enjoy his 2+2 for years to come as he knocks down the barriers of convention.
