This may look like an ordinary '76 Special Edition Trans Am, but it's the actual black-and-gold '73 T/A that Pontiac's John Schinella presented to Vice President of GM Design Bill Mitchell. An inspiration for the S/E package, the car's appearance was updated during its tenure as a Divisional show car, and today remains in unrestored condition. Bob Phillips of Tulsa, Oklahoma presently owns it. Note the original gold-lettered tires, which were to be part of the production S/E package.

Many hobbyists consider the black-and-gold '76 Special Edition Trans Am the most beautiful Second-Gen Firebird ever produced. This example, owned by Eric Levine of West Palm Beach, Florida, is one of 2,590 S/E models produced that model year. It was restored by Restore A Muscle Car in Lincoln, Nebraska.

In addition to gold accent striping, the Starlight Black finish features gold lettering in a German Gothic font and unique 50th Anniversary decals on each front fender. The 15x7-inch Honeycomb wheels were the only ones offered; though adorned by traditional chrome trim rings and center caps, they're finished in Anniversary Gold.

1976 Pontiac Anniversary Trans Am Roof
Though Hurst Hatches with dark glass were planned for all '76 S/E T/As, structural concerns limited installation to just 633 vehicles. It seems that most were produced early in the production run, but some late-year models received them, too.

1976 Pontiac Anniversary Trans Am Rusted Roof
The roof is an integral component of the unibody Firebird, and cutting it to install removable roof panels greatly compromises its structural integrity. Hurst Performance was keenly aware of this and attempted to restore body rigidity by adding a large metal brace to the roof structure. With the headliner removed, we can see it riveted into place.
