In the October 2011 issue of High Performance Pontiac, we told you all about rock star Sammy Hagar's love for the Pontiac Trans Am, and the '79 Trans Am that was given away as part of a KAMEL 106 radio contest. We asked if any of our readers knew what became of the car after it was given away in September 1979, as the radio station kept no documentation of who took possession of the car. Well, we haven't found the give-away car, but we're excited to relay to you that during our search, Sammy Hagar's own Trans Am has been found!
Sammy's 1979 TA is currently for sale through Specialty Sales Classics in Benicia, California. The car does not pass California smog requirements with the current engine, so the WS6 is being advertised as a track car with a smog-legal engine included in the sale. The power plant in question is a supercharged 454ci V-8 - a replacement of the original 403ci engine - paired with an automatic TH400 transmission. According to the dealership, the car is outfitted with the WS6 standard posi-traction rear end and is completely clean of rust.
Of course, having such a famous owner has had its downfalls, as the car has been stolen a total of three times resulting in a salvage title. Unfortunately, the original motor was stolen out of the car and never recovered.
The Trans Am's original "IEATZ28" license plate number has remained throughout the years, paying homage to Sammy's detestation of Camaros Z28s.
The awesome piece of rock-and-roll history can be yours for only $24,995.
Now, does anyone know where the Sammy Hagar/KAMEL 106 giveaway car is? Anyone? Email us with any information: email@example.com, and view the original story here.
