The lower end of engine was rebuilt it has a new cam and lifters .This is the 3rd set of lifters i put in the engine .This time with a crane cam kit. The valve train is guiet untill it gets hot. I thought it might be the rockers. They were roller rockers .So i put a new set of stock rockers on it. Now it is worse than before,noisy when hot or cold. I was thinking it might be the vale springs? The heads are 670's and looked like new,but i don't know what has been done to them they came on the engine when i bought the car .I ajusted the valves with both vales closed till no lash then 1/2 turn and then i tried 1 turn , I tried ajusting them cold and then hot nothing works ! Does anybody know something about this problem ? It did not have the correct engine in it. It had a firebird engine. I want to keep it as close to original as possible. I am looking for a 1969 Ram Air 3 4 Speed engine which was in that engine that I can rebuild myself. If you know where I can purchase one or maybe even a block it would be great. Jack Gaydosh not a Pontiac guru, but a Pontiac Dunce... I had a great deal of problems with All Pontiac's alum block. Everything was machined far out of spec and I spent $2000 in machine work to correct. Then on the dyno it blew out one of the oil passage into the water jacket. I had it repaired and assembled, only to have it blow out in another oil galley on the dyno. I am in Canada and had the very last Alum block so I finally got All Pontiac to take my engine, replaced the block with a cast iron, and have it assembled and tested on a dyno. They had Jack Gaydosh do the assembly saying he was a Pontiac Guru. Jack said it was loosing oil pressure at high RPM due to my oil pan. I got the engine back with the main bearing peeled apart. I replaced, and out on a Canton oil pan. I put on a local dyno to tune my fuel injection. One of the cylinder heads was not getting any oil to the valve train. Jack forgot to put in the oil plug that goes in front of the distributor. Pontiac guru misses the most basic rule of assembly on a $30,000 800hp motor? WTF... The o ring and seal there are notorious for leaks. A ton leaked out of mine as it sat in storage last winter. It was done at Melvin Benzaquen's Classic Restorations and it is quite involved but it can be done. There is a lot to change both inside and outside to switch over to standard heat and vents. You do have to look at you exhaust system as a whole. If the rest of your exhaust is stock after the Headers then listen to Brazil and put on the stock manifolds. Running from the 3 inch collector down to the 1.5 inch stock pipes and restrictive muffler will give you no performance advantage and the backpressure will make the headers real warm. I installed a 2.5 inch dual system with high flow cats and mufflers. The performance gain was excellent and I didn't get another jump in performance that big until I installed aluminum heads a few years ago. I am now looking at a 3 inch system from pypes along with a crossover to get her to breath a little more.Gotta have a winter project.The final problem is installing the headers themself. Not a fun job on a pontiac!!! Be prepared to partially pull the engine to get them in.Lots of fun getting a couple of the center header bolts started as well. I guess its up to you. The gains I saw were well worth it but I run the strip alot and enjoy the power. If you have a tenth anniversary TA and just want to cruise it and show it save yourself the headaches and put the stock logs back on. Personally, short of a teardown, I would turn the crank back and forth manually, slowly with a wrench while someone pours something like "Marvel Mystery Oil" into the heads in case there's any big chunks lurking. If you feel it start to bind at any point, it's a piece of cam which you can remove. Turning the engine over with the starter might mess it up worse if there is a lot of broken metal. I have it apart, but i notice the water neck from behind the water pump is a problem, and it looks like to me that's a permanent water pump base and to remove it i have to take off harmonic balance due to the fact this base seems to be connected to all that. I have no such experience with Pontiac and no benched motor to see this from a different vantage point. Long story short.. my boss gave me an engine from his pontiac firebird -68 which turned out to be -71 block with 71 heads(94) and 4-port intake(496140) from 1975. Next summer i'm going to buy his -68 firebird and will have to engines to work with ..the one he gave me and the one that's in the car. Anyway im going to tune up the eninge he gave to me and im very happy if someone could give me some tips on which cam etc i should put in.. i want as much hp as possible with the stock heads (i wont put as much money on the eninge as i've done to my corvette). I've never worked with a carburator before so dumb as i am i just bought some random which turned out to be a carter thermo quad 6-2141.. think it's 800cfm? .. i might be wrong. Is this carb something i can work with or should i buy a new one? :( I've sand blasted the whole engine and will put it apart this weekend and i've started to look at parts i will be buying. Althouth its a low mileage car and the interior is still brand new, the one previous owner unfortunately ruined the paint by covering it with a plastic sheet after a rain storm and before the hot sun came out....... anway the car is with me in the UK now and i cannot get a match for the colour. The body plate has the code 63(S). ie anaconda gold accorning to some research i did, the various US suppliers had the following codes: Dupont 5434-L Ditzler 2448 Rinshed Mason A-2562-D but none of this relates to any paint (even Dupont here is diffrent) avaialble here on a computer check at any paint shop i have tried. I have been through countless swatch books too. Can anyone post the formulation or at least instructions as to how to how to get the correct paint - the car deserves it! Carriers will not ship the paint to me from US in anything like the quantity needed, you see. Thanks for your help.
