West Virgina Track Battle - Pontiac Pavement Pounders
OWNER BIO: VANCE HECK51-year-old Vance Heck, who hails from Marion, Ohio, has his brother P.J. to thank for his attraction to powerful Pontiacs. P.J. owned Ponchos when Vance was growing up, and to say that this little brother followed in P.J.'s footsteps would be putting it lightly. Vance has owned three 1962 Pontiacs, a '61 SD aluminum bumper example, a '63 Royal SD, and currently owns the only existing aluminum 1963 Pontiac frame! We were duly impressed with his automotive-based playthings, but photos of sizable machine guns (including Gatlings!) and model train collections proved that this man really loves his toys! | OWNER: VANCE HECK | | STRIP SPECS | | Year/Model: | 1962 Catalina | | Race Weight: | 3,630 lbs. | | Curb Weight: | 3,450 lbs. | | Fuel Level: | 1/2 tank | | Engine: | 1970 YH-code 455, 470 cubic inches | | Built by: | P.J. OWNER BIO: JOHNNY DUNCAN62-year-old Johnny Duncan is another veteran racer in our group--34 years of running flat-out is longer than a few of HPP staffers' lives! Duncan has owned a variety of Ponchos in his life: a '64 LeMans, a '68 Firebird, a '71 Firebird, a '73 Firebird, and an '80 Firebird were around before John decided to upgrade to a newer-style Bird. This late-model had the look of a Pro Stocker, and Duncan entrusts Tom Beasley to do the driving duties for this NHRA and IHRA GTF Auto and GT Auto Pontiac. | OWNER: JOHNNY DUNCAN | | STRIP SPECS | | Year/Model: | 1995 Firebird | | Race Weight: | 3,305 lbs. | | Curb Weight: | 3,150 lbs. | | Fuel Level: | 1/2 tank | | Engine: | 1978 YX-code 400, 406 cubic inches | | Built by: | Roy McKinney | | Induction: | 800-cfm Quadrajet, .068 jets front, .053 rods rear | | Intake manifold: | Torker | | Heads: | Ported 1978 #6X, 2.11/1.66-in. stainless Manley valves | | Pistons: | Forged Venolia | | Rods: | Forged Crower | | Compression ratio: | 8.2:1 | | Crankshaft: | Stock nodular-iron | | Camshaft: | Lunati roller, 280o/280o at .050, .660/.660 lift | | Ignition: | MSD 7AL2 | | Total timing: | 36o all the time | | Exhaust: | 1.875-inch custom headers, no exhaust system | | Transmission: | Turbo-350 with trans brake | | Converter: | ATI 8-inch, 5500-rpm stall | | Shifter: | Turbo Action Cheetah | | Rear type/ratio: | Ford 9-inch, Strange spool and axles, 5.14 gears | | Brakes, F/R: | Disc/disc | | Wheels: | Center Line, 15x4 front, 15x14 rear | | Tires, F/R: | Mickey Thompson 28x4-15 front, Goodyear 14x32 slick rear | | Suspension, Front: | Afco coil-over,no stabilizer bar | | Suspension, Rear: | Afco coil-over,no stabilizer bar | | Chassis modifications: | 14-point roll cage | | Interior modifications: | Kirby seats, Auto Meter gauges | | Exterior modifications: | None | | Safety modifications: | Driveshaft loop, RCI seat belts, SFI flexplate and balancer, wheelie bars, trans shield, window net | | Paint: | Red | | Launch technique: | On the trans brake to 3800 rpm |
