West Virgina Track Battle - Pontiac Pavement Pounders
OWNER BIO: TIM WADEHurricane, West Virigina resident Tim Wade is 42, and 19 of those years have been spent trying to eke the most out of whatever he was pushing down the racetrack at the time. Tim was influenced by his dad's and older brother's trips to Riverside Dragway in Ohio in the 1970s, so it was almost a given that he would buy his Bird in 1980 because he liked the body style. Wade built it to its present blissful state because "it wasn't a Chevy," and has had several great experiences in the '68, from meeting his wife Shirley in it to winning 1st place at River Cities Raceway in Kentucky. | OWNER: TIM WADE | | STRIP SPECS | | Year/Model: | 1968 Firebird | | Race Weight: | 2,880 lbs | | Curb Weight: | 2,695 lbs. | | Fuel Level: | 1/4 tank | | Engine: | 1973 YX-code 400, 406 cubic inches | | Built by: | Tim Wade | | Induction: | 750-cfm Holley Double-Pumper, #81 primary, #83 secondary jets | | Intake manifold: | Torker II | | Heads: | Unported 1970 #12, 2.11/1.77-inch REV stainless valves | | Pistons: | Forged TRW | | Rods: | Stock cast with ARP bolts | | Compression ratio: | 10.25:1 | | Crankshaft: | Stock | | Camshaft: | Ultradyne hydraulic, 239o/247o at .050, .507/.530 lift | | Ignition: | MSD electronic distributor, ACCEL Super Coil | | Total timing: | 36o at 3000 rpm | | Exhaust: | 1.75-inch primary diameter Hooker headers into 3-inch wide x 18-inch long collectors, no mufflers | | Transmission: | 2-speed Powerglide with TCI trans brake | | Converter: | A-1 8-inch, 5000-rpm stall | | Shifter: | Hurst Quarter Stick | | Rear type/ratio: | GM 12-bolt, Strange spool, 5.13 gears | | Brakes, F/R: | Drum/drum | | Wheels: | Cragar Drag Star, 15x3.5 front, 15x14 rear | | Tires, F/R: | Moroso 28x7.10-15 front, Hoosier 32x14.5 slicks rear | | Suspension, Front: | Herb Adams shocks, Moroso springs, no stabilizer bar | | Suspension, Rear: | S&W adj. coil-overs, ladder bars | | Chassis modifications: | 8-point roll cage, subframe connectors | | Interior modifications: | Auto Meter tach, 5-way harness, window net | | Exterior modifications: | 5-inch snorkle, fiberglass hood, doors, and fenders from Unlimited | | Safety modifications: | 8-point roll cage, 2 driveshaft loops, 5-way Simpson harness, SFI approved balancer and flexplate | | Paint: | Burgundy | | Launch technique: | 3600 rpm on MSD 2-step |
OWNER BIO: ALLAN SANDY51-year-old Sandy readily admits that he loves "all Pontiacs--small, medium, and large." Allan, who is a national show-winning builder of muzzleloader rifles, has also owned a '65 Goat and a '76 Firebird Formula 400. | OWNER: ALLAN SANDY | | STRIP SPECS | | Year/Model: | 1970 GTO | | Race Weight: | 3,975 lbs. | | Curb Weight: | 3,775 lbs. | | Fuel Level: | 3/4 tank | | Engine: | 1972 455, 462 cubic inches | | Built by: | Allan Sandy | | Induction: | 750-cfm Quadrajet, stock jets for '70 455 | | Intake manifold: | Torker | | Heads: | Ported 1970 #15, 2.11/1.77-inch Ferrea stainless valves | | Pistons: | Hypereutectic Keith Black | | Rods: | Stock cast, resized, shot peened, and polished | | Compression ratio: | 9.75:1 | | Crankshaft: | Stock nodular-iron | | Camshaft: | Doug Herbert roller, 242o/246o at .050, .567/.585 lift | | Ignition: | Pertronix electronic, Pertronix coil, Crane HI6 box | | Total timing: | 34o at 2000 | | Exhaust: | 1.75-inch prim. diam. by Hooker, 3-inch Dynomax exhaust system with crossover | | Transmission: | Turbo 400 with TransGo manual shift kit, Gear Vendors overdrive | | Converter: | Continental 12-inch, 2800-rpm stall | | Shifter: | B&M Star | | Rear type/ratio: | GM 12-bolt, Eaton posi with 800-lb. clutch pack, Moser axles, 3.73 gears | | Brakes, F/R: | Factory disc/aluminum drum | | Wheels: | Weld 7x15 front, Center Line 8x15 rear | | Tires, F/R: | BF Goodrich 225mm front, M/T ET Street 28x11.5 rear | | Suspension, Front: | Stock replacement shocks, heavy-duty springs with 1 coil cut, 1.125-inch stabilizer bar | | Suspension, Rear: | Stock replacement shocks, stock springs, .875-inch stabilizer bar, Performance Suspension upper and lower control arms, airbags | | Chassis modifications: | Rear control arm braces | | Interior modifications: | Auto Meter gauges, switch panel | | Exterior modifications: | Fiberglass hood | | Safety modifications: | Driveshaft loop | | Paint: | Gold | | Launch technique: | Off idle |
