Pontiac Pavement Pounders Shootout Part II: Canadian Thunder
Owner Bio: Mike Voycey Go to a Pontiac drag race anywhere on the eastern half of the United States or Canada and you will likely see veteran Pontiac racer Mike Voycey, along with his wife Gayle and his beautiful '67 Firebird racecar. The 45-year old insurance inspector is a resident of Scarborough, Ontario and has owned this Firebird since July of 1974, just after graduating from high school. "Back when I started racing, there was nobody in Ontario that was interested in early Firebirds, especially with a Pontiac engine," Voycey recalled. "Everybody laughed when I told them that some day I would have a fast Pontiac. Guess what, haven't had any breakage in several years with any motor related components. I try to use intelligent building procedures and had some great help from a gentleman named Bob Maxey, who was probably the first real Pontiac powered 8-second car back in 1985 when he did it with a 10:1 compression Super Duty motor in his '85 Grand Am." In the years since, Mike has become a mentor of sorts to many Pontiac racers on both sides of the border, offering advice, technical assistance and even helps with engine building. Most of the Canadian shootout participants have benefited from his experience and expertise. It's that sort of camaraderie that helps the Pontiac hobby overall. | Strip Specs | | Year/Model: | '67 Firebird | | Race Weight: | 3,070 lbs | | Curb Weight: | 2,880 lbs | | Engine block: | 455 | | Cubic Inches before/after: | 455/464 | | Compression Ratio: | 13:1 | | Built By: | Mike Voycey | | Fuel: | Mark II unleaded 110 octane | | Carburetor: | Holley 1050 HP Dominator, #94 primary and #96 secondary jets | | Intake Manifold: | Edelbrock Victor | | Fuel pump: | Magaflow 280 | | Fuel pressure regulator: | Holley high flow | | Heads: | '69 R/A-IV 722, owner ported, flow 280 cfm at 28"of water on intake and 205 on exhaust | | Pistons: | Ross flat-tops | | Rods: | Crower 4340 Billet Steel | | Crankshaft: | Stock 103 nodular-iron 455, 4.21" stroke | | Rotating Assembly Balanced: | Yes | | Camshaft: | Comp Cams roller with 275*/278* duration, .630" net lift with Crower billet aluminum rocker arms | | Lobe Separation: | 106* | | Lobe Centerline: | 104* | | Installed: | Straight up | | Ignition: | Mallory Unilite | | Total Timing: | 30* total at idle | | Exhaust: | Custom 1.875, 2, and 2.125" stepped headers built by Eddie Bryck, Flowmaster 4-2-1 3.5" collectors | | Power Adder: | None | | Transmission: | Turbo 400 built by Rossler Transmission in Ohio, Rossler transbrake, 2.20 first gear | | Converter: | Coan 8 3/4", 4,800 stall | | Shifter: | B&M Pro Stick | | Brakes, Front: | 11" Lamb disc | | Brakes, Rear: | 9.5" factory drum | | Rear: | 12 bolt/Mark Williams, gun-drilled axles and lightweight spool | | Wheels & Tires, Front: | Moroso 7.10s on 15x3.5 Weld Alumastars, 32 psi | | Wheels & Tires, Rear: | 14.5x32 Phoenix slicks on 15x14 Weld Prostars, 11 psi | | Suspension, Front: | Stock front A-arms with Moroso springs, Koni adjustable shocks | | Suspension, Rear: | Lamb 4-link with wishbone locator, titanium 4-link bolts, Koni double-adjustable shocks | | Chassis Modifications: | Custom back-halfed round tube chassis by The Chassis Shop in Toronto with 12-point cage, aluminum rear wheelwells and trunk floor | | Interior Modifications: | Single racing seat, Autometer gauges, factory dash, steel floor in front | | Exterior Modifications: | Fiberglass reproduction 400 hood, otherwise all steel body | | Safety Modifications: | Two driveshaft loops, 5/8s wheel studs, rollcage, five-point harness | | Launch Technique: | Transbrake, two step, 3,000 chip on starting line | | Best ET/MPH prior to event (1/4 Mile): | 9.40 at 141.70 mph | | Best ET/MPH prior to event (1/8 Mile): | 5.98 at 114 mph |

Owner Bio: Wayne Schumacher Kitchener, Ontario resident Wayne Schumacher seems to have adjusted very well to a Pontiac that was actually his second choice for a restoration project. After repeated searches for a suitable GTO proved fruitless, he purchased his Lucerne Blue '72 T/A from a friend. Schumacher credits his occupation as a used parts salesman for his ability to find what he needs to restore his cars. The two-year project was obviously time well-spent. "If I had a dollar for every time someone says 'I used to have one of those,' I'd be rich." The 43 year-old Schumacher has been racing for six years now, with no end in sight. In addition to his Lucerne Blue beauty, he has owned many other Pontiacs. They include: a '49 Silverstreak, '65, '66, '69 and '70 GTO coupes, a '70 Judge, a '71 GTO convertible, a '68 Firebird 400, '71 and '81 Trans Ams, '65 and '67 Tempests, as well as '72 and '77 LeManses. | Strip Specs | | Year/Model: | '72 Firebird Trans Am | | Race Weight: | 3,775 lbs | | Curb Weight: | 3,550 lbs | | Engine: | '73 455, code XL,(have original WM block at home) | | Displacement before/after overbore: | 455 bored 0.030" 462 cid | | Compression Ratio: | 8.4:1 | | Built By: | Beatty & Woods, assembled by owner | | Fuel: | 93-octane pump gas | | Carburetor: | 650 Holley Double Pumper, jets: #66 front #80 rear, power valve plugged | | Intake Manifold: | '72 455 H.O. aluminum with cast-iron crossover | | Fuel Pump: | NOS stock GM | | Heads: | '72 455 H.O. 7F6, unported, stock 2.11/1.77 valves | | Pistons: | Forged TRW | | Rods: | #541000 cast | | Crankshaft: | 455 | | Rotating Assembly Balanced: | Yes | | Camshaft: | Comp Cams hydraulic, 218*/224* duration at .050, .460/.469" lift with factory stamped 1.5:1 rockers | | Lobe Separation: | 110* | | Centerline: | 110* | | Installed Position: | Straight up | | Ignition: | GM HEI | | Total Timing: | 34* at 3,000 rpm | | Exhaust: | Factory 455 H.O. manifolds, 2" diameter exhaust pipes, stainless mufflers by L&N Custom, no crossover | | Power Adder: | None | | Transmission type: | M22 Muncie 4-speed original | | Clutch: | Factory 11" | | Shifter: | Factory Hurst | | Rear: | 3.42 Safe-T-Track | | Brakes Front: | Stock Trans Am 10.9" disc | | Brakes Rear: | Stock 9.5" drum | | Wheels & Tires, Front: | 255/60R-15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As on 15x7 Honeycomb wheels, 35 psi | | Wheels & Tires, Rear: | Same as above, street, for strip, 265/60-15 McCreary street/strip tires on steel 15x7 wheels, 15 psi | | Suspension, Front: | Rebuilt factory stock Y-96 suspension, including stock-rate springs, OE replacement shocks and 1.25" stabilizer bar | | Suspension, Rear: | Rebuilt stock Y-96 suspension, including stock-rate springs, OE replacement shocks and .875" stabilizer bar | | Chassis Modifications: | Factory stock | | Interior Modifications: | Factory stock seats, dash and gauges | | Exterior Modifications: | Factory shaker hood, spoilers, flares and extractors | | Safety Modifications: | Factory seats belts | | Launch Technique: | Footbrake launch at 2,000 rpm, shift at 5,000 rpm | | Best ET/MPH prior to event (1/4 Mile): | 13.7 at 103 mph |
