Pontiac Pavement Pounders Shootout Part II: Canadian Thunder

Owner Bio: Mike Voycey
Go to a Pontiac drag race anywhere on the eastern half of the United States or Canada and you will likely see veteran Pontiac racer Mike Voycey, along with his wife Gayle and his beautiful '67 Firebird racecar. The 45-year old insurance inspector is a resident of Scarborough, Ontario and has owned this Firebird since July of 1974, just after graduating from high school. "Back when I started racing, there was nobody in Ontario that was interested in early Firebirds, especially with a Pontiac engine," Voycey recalled. "Everybody laughed when I told them that some day I would have a fast Pontiac. Guess what, haven't had any breakage in several years with any motor related components. I try to use intelligent building procedures and had some great help from a gentleman named Bob Maxey, who was probably the first real Pontiac powered 8-second car back in 1985 when he did it with a 10:1 compression Super Duty motor in his '85 Grand Am." In the years since, Mike has become a mentor of sorts to many Pontiac racers on both sides of the border, offering advice, technical assistance and even helps with engine building. Most of the Canadian shootout participants have benefited from his experience and expertise. It's that sort of camaraderie that helps the Pontiac hobby overall.

Owner Bio: Wayne Schumacher
Kitchener, Ontario resident Wayne Schumacher seems to have adjusted very well to a Pontiac that was actually his second choice for a restoration project. After repeated searches for a suitable GTO proved fruitless, he purchased his Lucerne Blue '72 T/A from a friend. Schumacher credits his occupation as a used parts salesman for his ability to find what he needs to restore his cars. The two-year project was obviously time well-spent. "If I had a dollar for every time someone says 'I used to have one of those,' I'd be rich." The 43 year-old Schumacher has been racing for six years now, with no end in sight. In addition to his Lucerne Blue beauty, he has owned many other Pontiacs. They include: a '49 Silverstreak, '65, '66, '69 and '70 GTO coupes, a '70 Judge, a '71 GTO convertible, a '68 Firebird 400, '71 and '81 Trans Ams, '65 and '67 Tempests, as well as '72 and '77 LeManses.
