It's very interesting to observe how things change in the battle of the sexes. Though women race car drivers were a part of the racing scene for as long as there has been a racing scene, they were usually seen as curiosities or, at best, minor players. As a result, women weren't taken very seriously by the racing establishment. By the '50s, though, things had loosened up enough where "Powder-Puff" divisions for women often ran as part of a regular weekend race program. Pioneers like Shirley Muldowney, Carol Cox, Shirley "The Drag-On Lady" Shahan, Judy Lilly, and Charlene Wood really opened the door for women drag racers all over North America. Interestingly, the main surge of women racers over the last 20 years or so has been the weekend family race team campaigning a bracket car. With dad serving as the crew chief, mom sometimes takes over the driving duties. Other times, she gets a race car of her own to campaign, and don't be too surprised if she built it herself. One thing is for sure, 'tis a fool to underestimate the reaction-time potential of a lady drag racer. Our quintet of lady racers ran the gamut of experience, from beginner to seasoned veteran. They include Linda "The Pontiac Lady" Spidel with her '64 Tempest; Jamie Taylor with her '01 Grand Prix GT with a swapped-in, supercharged 3800 V-6; Amy "Herdswoman" Richcreek with a '65 GTO; Vanessa Heckaman driving a Grand Prix GT with a 3800 stroker motor; Mary Beth Hess with her 462 Pontiac-powered '66 GTO; and Babe Dyer with a 12-second '99 GTP. As was true with the last two shootouts, this particular event took place on April 26, 2004 at Norwalk Raceway Park. While the informational charts look pretty much the same, we have altered things slightly by omitting the ages of the participants, as well as the dreaded curb weight versus race weight differential. We didn't want to put these drivers on the spot; the consequences could be too great--not everything has changed with the battle of the sexes. Owner Bio: Linda "The Pontiac Lady" Spidel Linda and her turquoise and pink Pontiac are familiar sights at dragstrips all over the East and Midwest. It's a family pastime for the Spidels, as husband Terry and son Brad also race traditional Pontiac-powered drag machines. Terry's '62 Catalina appeared in HPP two months ago, and Brad's centrifugally supercharged Firebird has been seen pulling outrageous wheelies at Norwalk and elsewhere. Linda, a 12-year race veteran, previously ran a similarly painted '65 Catalina, but the urge to go faster had Terry building her the 1,000-pound lighter Tempest, which Brad painted in her signature colors. In addition to her race car, Linda and Terry also own more than 20 other Pontiacs, including a '56 Safari two-door wagon, a '59 Bonneville two-door hardtop, a '61 Safari wagon, a '66 Bonneville limo, and an '87 T-1000 race car known as the "Lil' Chief." | Strip Specs | | Year/Model: | '64 Tempest | | Race Weight: | 3,115 lbs | | Engine: | '68 428 | | Cubic Inches before/after: | 428/440 | | Compression Ratio: | 12.75:1 | | Built By: | Terry and Brad Spidel | | Fuel: | 110-octane Citgo | | Carburetor: | 1050 Holley, #99/99 jets | | Spacer Plate: | 2" | | Intake Manifold: | Modified Holley Street Dominator | | Fuel System: | 2 Holley Blue Pumps with 1/2" lines, 7 psi | | Heads: | '68 #16, ported by Butler Performance, Ferrea 2.11/1.77 valves | | Flow Numbers: | N/A | | Pistons: | TRW 455 SD 4.180" bore with 30cc domes | | Rings: | Total-Seal Race | | Rods: | M/T aluminum, stock 6.625" length | | Crankshaft: | 428 Arma-Steel, balanced rotating assembly | | Camshaft: | Comp Cams solid-lifter roller, 264º/272º duration at .050, 108º LSA and centerline, .583/.583 lift with 1.5:1 Harland Sharp Roller rockers | | Installed Position: | 4º advanced | | Distributor: | Mallory HEI | | Total Timing: | 36º locked, 32 degrees in 3rd gear | | Exhaust: | Hooker Headers, 2" primaries, 3.5" collectors | | Power Adder: | None | | Transmission: | Turbo 400, built by Dave Himes, reverse valve body | | Converter: | 8" TCI, 4,500-rpm stall | | Shifter: | B&M Pro Stick | | Rear Type/Ratio: | GM 9.3", 4.10 gears, spool, 35-spline Moser axles | | Brakes F/R: | Wilwood 9" disc/GM 10x2" drum | | Wheels/Tires Fr: | Weld 15x3.5/Moroso 7.10x15 | | Wheels/Tires Rr: | Weld 15x12/Goodyear 31x13 slicks | | Tire Pressure F/R: | 35 psi/10 psi | | Suspension, Fr: | Stock GM, Moroso Trick springs, 80/20 Competition Engineering shocks | | Suspension Rr: | Back-halfed with ladder bars, QAL coilover shocks | | Chassis Modifications: | 12-point rollcage, mid-engine plate | | Interior Modifications: | Custom aluminum panels, racing seat, steering wheel, carpeting | | Exterior Modifications: | Tilt fiberglass front end, doors and rear bumper | | Safety Modifications: | Full rollcage, driveshaft loop, 5-point harness, window net, SFI-approved drivetrain parts | | Launch Technique: | Foot brake to 2,500 rpm | | Best e.t./mph Prior to Event (1/4-Mile): | 10.36 at 129.0 | | Strip Tuning Log | | Run | Tuning | Launch RPM | Shift Point | 60-FT | 1/8-Mile | 1/4-Mile | Notes | | 1. | 36º | 2,500 | 6,200 | 1.46 | 6.60/104.00 | 10.42/127.41 | 32º in 3rd | | 2. | 36º | 2,500 | 6,200 | 1.46 | 6.60/103.9 | 10.41/128.16 | Same | | 3. | Same | 2,500 | 6,200 | 1.44 | 6.56/104.69 | 10.33/130.32 | Same | | 4. | Same | 2,500 | 6,200 | 1.47 | 6.60/104.20 | 10.39/128.71 | Same | | 5. | Same | 2,500 | 6,200 | 1.49 | 6.63/104.19 | 10.42/128.96 | Same | While Jamie has only been racing less than one year, her quest for high performance has paid benefits in other areas as well. "I saw a Grand Prix GTX and fell in love with it, but I couldn't quite afford it. So I bought the GT and put the engine in when I was able to afford it." The engine in question was a supercharged 3800 Series II out of a '99 Bonneville SSEi, and it has been breathed on a bit. The engine conversion actually had a secondary benefit. "I met my fiance while doing the L67 swap. He and a friend were hired to do the swap and teach me about my car, and it went from there." Just imagine how boring life would have been if she had the money to plunk down on that GTX! Jamie's Grand Prix is her second Pontiac; her first was a '92 Grand Am. She also mentioned that her dog is named Cam, as in camshaft. | Strip Specs | | Year/Model: | '01 Grand Prix GT | | Race Weight: | 3,630 lbs | | Engine: | '99 L67 supercharged 3800 V-6 | | Cubic Inches Before/After: | 231/231 | | Compression Ratio: | 8.5:1 | | Built By: | GM | | Fuel: | Cam 2,100-octane | | Air Box: | Whiz Air 9" K&N cone | | MAF/Throttle Body: | Stock GM 68 mm | | Injectors: | Stock 36 lb-hr | | Intake Manifold: | Stock GM | | Fuel System: | Factory lines & pump | | Heads: | Stock '99 L67 GM, stock 1.80/1.52 valves | | Flow Numbers: | Stock | | Pistons: | Stock GM hypereutectic | | Rings: | Stock GM | | Rods: | Stock GM powdered-metal | | Crankshaft: | Stock GM nodular-iron 3.4" stroke | | Rotating Assembly Balanced: | Stock | | Camshaft: | Comp Cams XP-HOT hydraulic roller, 212º/224º at .050, .520/.536 lift with stock 1.6:1 rockers, 114º centerline,116º LSA | | Installed Position: | Straight up | | Distributor: | Stock GM crank trigger | | Exhaust: | SLP headers,1 5/8" primaries, 2 1/4" crossover, 3" collectors, rest is stock GM | | Power Adder: | Stock Eaton Model 90 super-charger, Pulley Boys 3.0" pulley, 14.5 psi boost | | Transaxle: | GM 4T65-E transaxle with limited-slip differential, upgraded to 4T65-E HD specs, 3.29 final drive ratio | | Converter: | Stock | | Shifter: | Stock | | Brakes F/R: | Production 10.9" | | Wheels & Tires, Fr: | Stock 16" Torque Stars/ 245/50-16 Nitto Drag Radials | | Wheels & Tires, Rr: | Panther 17x8"/ BFG G-Force KDWS | | Tire Pressure F/R: | 17 psi/32 psi | | Suspension F/R: | GM Performance Parts suspension kit with Koni double-adjustable shocks | | Chassis Modifications: | None | | Interior Modifications: | None | | Exterior Modifications: | Removed left headlamp for the event | | Safety Modifications: | Stock GM seatbelts | | Custom Computer Programming: | By Digital Horsepower raised shift points, trans pressure, etc. | | Launch Technique: | Foot brake to 1,500 rpm | | Best e.t./mph Prior to Event (1/4-Mile): | 15.35 at 88 mph | | Strip Tuning Log | | Run | Tuning | Launch RPM | Shift Point | 60-FT | 1/8-Mile | 1/4-Mile | | 1. | As stated in Strip Specs | 1,500 | 5,900 | 2.21 | n/a | 14.72/94.24 | | 6. | Same | 1,500 | 5,900 | 2.12 | 9.30/75.83 | 14.48/94.37 | | 8. | See Notes | 1,500 | 5,900 | 1.99 | 8.50/86.04 | 13.17/105.64 | | 9. | Same | 1,500 | 5,900 | 2.36 | 9.01/85.82 | 13.67/105.4 | | 10. | Same | 1,500 | 5,900 | 2.06 | 8.59/85.97 | 13.25/105.84 | | Five most important passes are listed here in the order that they occurred | | Notes | | Run 1: 1/8-mile didn't register; Run 8: Re-gapped plugs to .055, fixed vacuum leak and pulled traction control fuse |
