Owner Bio: Rick Holladay With 40-plus years of racing experience, some as an NHRA and AHRA Pro-Stock driver, 64-year-old Rick is no stranger to the track or '65 GTOs. Nor is he a stranger to AHRA National records. "In 1965, I owned a GTO that I raced under the name 'Jolly Green Giant,'" he says. "The car was built by Arnie Beswick, and a company has since made a 1/18-scale model of it." Regarding his current '65, Rick relates, "I wanted a convertible to cruise but still race as well, like the Jolly Green Giant." For Rick, the most fun he's had behind the wheel thus far was taking the runner-up spot at the Ames Performance Pontiac Nats in 2004 in the Stock class. Over the years, this lawyer has owned the Giant, another '65 Goat convertible, and a '64 GTO. | STRIP SPECS | | Year/Model: | '65 GTO convertible | | Race Weight: | 3,865 lbs | | Curb Weight: | 3,590 lbs | | Type of Fuel: | 93-octane | | Engine: | '66 421 | | Cubic Inches Before/After Bore: | 434 | | Built By: | Central Virginia Machine | | Carburetors: | '66 Tri-Power, 0.70/0.70/0.70 jets | | Spacer Plate: | None | | Intake Manifold: | '66 Tri-Power | | Fuel System: | Holley Blue electric, Holley reg set to 7 psi, 1/2-inch lines | | Heads: | Edelbrock 87cc milled to 82cc's, slightly ported | | Flow Numbers: | NA | | Valves: | Stainless 2.11/1.77 | | Pistons/Rings: | Ross forged flat-top 0.060-over 421/Speed Pro | | Rods: | Eagle forged-steel, 6.800-in | | Compression Ratio: | 9.8:1 | | Crankshaft: | Stock 4.00-in stroke, reground to fit rods | | Rotating Assembly Balanced: | Yes | | Camshaft: | UltraDyne, hydraulic, flat-tappet | | Camshaft Specs: | 231/239-deg at 0.050, 0.539/0.551 lift | | Camshaft LSA: | 113-deg | | Camshaft Centerline: | 112-deg | | Installed Position: | 2-deg advanced | | Rocker Arms: | Comp Cams roller 1.65:1 | | Ignition: | Mallory Unilite dist, Crane coil, Mallory wires, AC 41629 plugs | | Total Timing: | 35-deg all in by 3,000 rpm | | Exhaust: | Hedman Hustler Hedders, 1.875-in primaries, 3-in collectors, 2.5-in pipes, X-type crossover, Dynomax mufflers | | Power Adder: | None | | Transmission: | M22W from Auto Gear (wide-ratio, all same ratios as M20 trans) with Liberty Pro-Shift gears for Second, Third, and Fourth | | Clutch: | 10.5-in Centerforce | | Shifter: | Stock Hurst | | Rear: | Moser 12-bolt, Eaton posi, 3.73 gears, 33-spline axles | | Brakes F/R: | Stock 9.5-in drum | | Wheels F/R: | 14x7 Rally II/Weld Draglite 15x8 | | Tires F/R: | Hoosier 215/70R14 / M/T ET Streets 26x10.5x15 | | Tire Pressure F/R: | 35 psi/15 psi | | Suspension Fr: | Stock springs, old worn shocks, removed stabilizer bar | | Suspension Rr: | S&W ladder bars by Virginia Speed in Virginia Beach, QA1 coilovers set "second from loose" | | Chassis Mods: | 8-point rollcage | | Interior Mods: | None | | Exterior Mods: | None | | Safety Mods: | Rollcage, driveshaft loop, 5-point harness | | Paint: | Teal Turquoise | | Launch Technique: | Sidestep clutch at 4,000 rpm | | Best ET/MPH Prior to Event (1/4-Mile): | 11.95 at 113.2 | | Best ET/MPH Prior to Event (1/8-Mile): | 7.71 at 90.5 |
