Pontiac Pavement Pounders Shootout - Norwalk Raceway Park Part 2
Owner Bio: Rick Lucas "This T/A was found in a backyard serving as an apartment complex for mice, raccoons, and anything else that could fit through the rust holes," Rick tells HPP. "It sat from 1988 to 2002 when my father (Walt) and I began its transformation into a racecar. This is the third car that my dad and I have frame-off restored. We work very well together and seem to build some pretty nice cars." At 33, this mail carrier has been racing for 16 years and says that this Pontiac is the first the duo built as a dedicated racecar. Other Pontiacs to pass through the Lucas' household include a '70 Goat, a '70 LeMans convertible, a '90 Sunbird convertible, three late-'70s/early-'80s Bonnevilles, and a '78 GP. | STRIP SPECS | | Year/Model: | '79 Trans Am | | Race Weight: | 3,610 lbs | | Curb Weight: | 3,370 lbs | | Type of Fuel: | 110-octane Sunoco | | Engine: | '75 455 | | Cubic Inches Before/After Bore: | 455/462 | | Built By: | Walt and Rick Lucas | | Carburetor: | 850-cfm Mighty Demon, #83/#90 jets | | Spacer Plate: | 1-inch, aluminum, open | | Intake Manifold: | Torker II | | Fuel System: | MagnaFuel 280-gph electric pump, MagnaFuel reg set to 7.25 psi, cell to filter 10 AN line, pump to reg. is 8 AN, reg. to carb 6 AN line | | Heads: | '68 #16, ported by KRE | | Flow Numbers: | 248-cfm intake, 198-cfm exhaust at 0.500 lift at 28-in of pressure | | Valves: | Ferrea stainless, 2.11/1.77 | | Pistons/Rings: | TRW PowerForged flat-top 0.030/Sealed Power | | Rods: | Stock cast 6.625-in | | Compression Ratio: | 10.75:1 | | Crankshaft: | Eagle cast-steel, 4.210-in stroke | | Rotating Assembly Balanced: | Yes | | Camshaft: | Comp Cams, flat-tappet, solid | | Camshaft Specs: | 265/276-deg duration at 0.050, 0.562/0.556 lift | | Camshaft LSA: | 106-deg | | Camshaft Centerline: | 102-deg | | Installed Position: | 4-deg advanced | | Rocker Arms: | CAT roller, 1.50:1 | | Ignition: | Electronic MSD Pro-Billet dist, MSD Blaster 2 coil, MSD 6AL, Taylor 8mm wires, NGK plugs | | Total Timing: | 30-deg all in by 1,500 rpm | | Exhaust: | Doug Thorley headers, 1.75-in primaries, 3-in collectors, 3-in pipes, Dynomax race mufflers | | Power Adder: | None | | Transmission: | Turbo 400, built for the strip by Mike Karas | | Converter: | Perfect Converter, 10-inch, 3,800-rpm stall | | Shifter: | B&M Pro Ratchet | | Rear: | GM 10-bolt, Moser spool, 3.73:1 gears, 32-spline axles, C-clip eliminators | | Brakes F/R: | Stock 10.9-in disc/9.5-in drum | | Wheels F/R: | Rally II 15x6/15x8 | | Tires F/R: | Sussex 165/70R15 / M/T 28x10.5x15 slicks | | Tire Pressure F/R: | 32 psi/14 psi | | Suspension Fr: | Stock springs, CE adj. race shocks set to 90/10, poly bushings, removed stabilizer bar | | Suspension Rr: | IA traction bars, HD springs, CE adj. gas shocks set to 50/50 | | Chassis Mods: | CE sub-frame connectors, 8-point cage | | Interior Mods: | Kirkey race seat, Auto Meter gauges, removed rear and passenger seat | | Exterior Mods: | Harwood scoop | | Safety Mods: | Driveshaft loop, 8-point cage, Peak Racing Equip. 5-point harness, rear-mounted battery, braided fuel line, Hughes trans shield and flexplate shield, SFI-approved drivetrain parts | | Paint: | '90 GM Forest Green | | Launch Technique: | Rev to 3,000, drop the hammer | | Best ET/MPH Prior to Event (1/4-Mile): | 11.29 at 119.03 | | Best ET/MPH Prior to Event (1/8-Mile): | 7.15 at 95.36 |
