Pontiac Pavement Pounders Shootout - Norwalk Raceway Park Part 4
Owner Bio: Butch Kale A 21-year race veteran, Butch had won several B.O.P. racing events in his '64 GTO, but his favorites were "winning B.O.P. race at Bristol, Tennessee in 2002 and B.O.P. at Farmington, North Carolina in 2004." Besides its winning ways, the 59-year-old retired truck driver liked his GTO so much because "The car has a drag race history that originates on the West Coast 30 years ago," When this '64 GTO was totaled, then-owner Mike Riola and his son, James, turned their wrecked family car into racecar. Many years later in 1992, Butch bought the GTO sight unseen out of California. He has also owned a '65 GTO street car, a '65 Catalina, and a '68 Firebird drag car. Butch is pictured here (right) with his good friend Larry Snyder. | STRIP SPECS | | Year/Model: | '64 GTO | | Race Weight: | 2,920 lbs | | Curb Weight: | 2,670 lbs | | Fuel Level: | 2 gal in the Harwood 3-gal cell | | Fuel: | Methanol | | Engine: | '71 455 | | Cubic Inches Before/After: | 469 | | Engine Built By: | Larry Snyder, machine work and balancing by Dale at Nichols' Engineering, Gastonia, NC | | Power Adder: | None | | Top End | | Fuel Injection: | Ron's Flying Toilet, #90 fuel pill, high-speed bypass | | Throttle Body: | 1,240 cfm | | Spacer Plate: | None | | Intake Manifold: | Victor | | Fuel Pump: | Ron's 0-1/2 | | Lines: | Braided stainless, -10 fuel pump inlet, -8 pressure, -6 return, -6 high-speed bypass | | Heads: | #62 D-port | | Head Porting: | Yes | | Flow Numbers: | N/A | | Valves: | Ferrea SS 2.11/1.77 | | Bottom End | | Pistons: | JE forged, antifriction coating on skirts, heat-resistant coating from Calico on head of pistons, flat-top, 4.215-in | | Rings: | Total Seal gapless | | Rods: | Eagle H-beam forged-steel, 6.625-in | | Compression Ratio: | 12.25:1 | | Crankshaft: | Stock nodular-iron, 4.210 stroke, Program Engineering main caps, engine fully studded | | Rotating Assembly Balanced: | Yes | | Other Features: | Moroso pan evacuation system, Teflon-coated modified Pontiac full windage tray | | Camshaft | | Brand: | Crane solid roller | | Duration at 0.050: | 268/276-deg | | Duration Advertised: | 300/308-deg | | Lift With Specified Rocker Arms: | 0.693/0.693 | | Lobe Separation Angle: | 110-deg | | Centerline: | 105.5-deg | | Installed Position: | Straight up | | Rocker Arms: | Crower SS roller, 1.65:1 | | Ignition | | Distributor: | MSD Pro-Billet | | Amplifier: | MSD 6AL | | Coil: | Blaster | | Wires: | ACCEL 300+ 8.8mm | | Spark Plugs: | Autolite AR | | Total Timing: | 36-deg | | RPM Total Timing is Reached: | 2,800 | | Electronics: | 2-step module selector, Biondo Mega 450 digital delay box | | Exhaust | | Headers: | Hedman heavily modified, EGT sensors in tubes, Jet Hot coated | | Primaries: | 2.00-in | | Collectors: | 3.50-in | | Drivetrain | | Transmission: | Turbo 400, 2.75 First, 1.57 Second, transbrake | | Converter: | 9-in TCI, 4,800-rpm stall | | Shifter: | B&M Pro Ratchet, electric-actuated | | Rear: | '57 Olds | | Rear-Gear Ratio: | 4.10:1 | | Spool: | Henry 40-spline | | Axles: | Henry 40-spline | | Chassis and Suspension | | Brakes F/R: | 9.5-in drum/11-in drum | | Wheels F/R: | Monocoque 15x3.5/Weld 15x12 | | Tires F/R: | Hoosier 25x4.5x15/Hoosier 32x13x15 slicks | | Tire Pressure F/R: | 35 psi/6.5 psi | | Suspension Front | | Springs: | QA1 | | Control Arms: | Coleman fabricated tubular | | Stabilizer Bar: | None | | Shocks: | QA1 adj coilovers | | Suspension Rear | | Type: | 4-link fabricated by Precision Automotive Specialists | | Springs: | Koni | | Stabilizer Bar: | None | | Shocks: | Koni coilovers 12-way adj, set to medium | | Chassis Mods: | Fabricated framerails and suspension from firewall forward, fabricated framerails and suspension from rear wall rearward, integral rollcage | | The Rest | | Interior Mods: | Gauges, electronics | | Exterior Mods: | Fiberglass bumpers, hood, deck, and lid, Lexan windows | | Safety Mods: | 5-point harness, driveshaft loop TCI trans shield SFI-approved ATI damper and TCI flexplate, 14-point cage | | Paint: | Gold and red with graphics | | Launch Technique: | Leave at 3,200 (full throttle with 2-step), flashes the converter to 4,800 when releasing the transbrake | | Best 1/4-mile ET, MPH Prior to Event: | 9.44 at 142 |
