Duke Jefferson of West Mifflin,... Duke Jefferson of West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, came to the track with a pumped-up First-Gen, running high 10s. His strip-only '69 Firebird features a 0.030 over 455 with No. 16 cast-iron heads, a Turbo 400 trans and a 4.56-geared rear. Once again, Chief Pontiac Productions and Virginia Motorsports Park invited HPP to use the newly-renovated NHRA-sanctioned track for our Pavement Pounders Shootout. Although the morning weather was damp, the crew of VMP quickly dried the track and the sun came out for a great afternoon of racing. Eight drivers participated, four of whom are highlighted in Part I, and the second four will be showcased in Part II. Weather Report The temperature rose from the high 60s to 73.9 degrees. Density altitude was 1,435 feet, so we will use a factor of 0.9848 for e.t. and 1.0157 for mph for 1,400 feet to chart the theoretical best performance at sea level. This will be done on the best pass only for each participant based on elapsed time. Let's get to the action.
Zachary Edwards of Virginia... Zachary Edwards of Virginia Beach, Virginia, represented the new GTO crowd with his '05 Goat. This 364ci Pontiac is equipped with a T56 tranny and 3.91 gears, and produces 11-second time slips. Billy Farrell traveled from... Billy Farrell traveled from Bridgeton, New Jersey, to compete in his Third-Gen powerhouse, an '84 Trans Am that runs in the low-11s. It features a 0.030-over 400 powerplant, Turbo 400 and 4.10 gears. Larry Cooper of Sikeston,... Larry Cooper of Sikeston, Missouri, campaigns a '72 Firebird sponsored by Fabulous Firebirds. It's an 8-second alcohol-fed Super Pro car with an IA-II 525ci powerplant, a Powerglide and 4.10 gears. Owner Bio:Duke Jefferson Duke Jefferson, 57 years old, is a tire technician by trade and has been racing for 20 years. He says he caught the racing bug when he drove a friend's car and experienced burning rubber for the first time. Duke's first Pontiac was a '65 GTO, followed by a '77 Trans Am. He says the GTO took his heart and he has been strictly Pontiac ever since. He bought this '69 Firebird for just $300. Duke says, "I'm happy that I've finally started getting some wins after 20 years in the hobby, and I love the camaraderie of Pontiac-only race events." | Strip Tuning Log | | Run/Tuning | Launch RPM | Shift Pt. | 60-ft. | 1/8-mile | 1/4-mile | | 2. #84/85 jets | 2,800 | 5,900 | 1.43 | 6.94/NA | 11.01/119.54 | | 3. Owner Bio:Zachary Edwards Racing for only two years, Zachary Edwards of Virginia Beach, Virginia, knew he wanted a rear-wheel drive musclecar and opted for a Pontiac-this '05 GTO is his very first. "It's great when someone rolls up to a stop light next to a car that has a commanding presence and sounds like a race car shaking the tarmac apart. That's what I wanted," he says. Zachary took first place in Mid-Class for his club at the New Age GTO Fall Brawl in November, 2006, and looks forward to winning rounds in the future. He is a manufacturing engineer, a member of the GTO Owner Association of Tidewater and enjoys modifying his GTO. | Strip Tuning Log | | Run/Tuning | Launch RPM | Shift Pt. | 60-ft. | 1/8-mile | 1/4-mile | | 1. 18 psi | 4,200 | 6,500 | 2.08 | 8.15/91.08 | 12.40/116.60 | | 3. 16 psi | 3,500 | 6,800 | 1.93 | 7.96/90.61 | 12.27/114.44 | | 5. 14 psi | 4,000 | 6,500 | 1.68 | 7.66/91.25 | 11.96/114.58 | | 8. 13 psi | 4,000 | 6,500 | 1.66 | 7.61/90.98 | 11.91/114.87 | | Best Pass Corrected | | | | 7.49/92.4 | 11.72/116.67 | | 9. 13 psi | 4,500 | 6,800 | 1.67 | 7.65/90.93 | 11.95/114.99 | | Run Notes: 1) Bog off line, speed shift, 3) Spun tires, speed shift, 5) Hard launch, speed shift, 8) No speed shift, short shifted 2-3, 9) Speed shift |

Owner Bio: Billy Farrell Now 23, Billy Farrell of Bridgeton, New Jersey, bought his Trans Am when he was just 16 years old. "I really liked the appearance of the Third-Gen Firebirds," he recalls. Billy started out knowing "nothing about cars," but says he is pleased with what he has learned. He has completed everything on his Trans Am but the paint. "I am so proud of what I have done," Billy says. "I would like to thank my uncle for getting me into drag racing Pontiacs at a young age. It taught me responsibility. I couldn't imagine living any other way." Owner Bio: Larry Cooper Larry Cooper says he is "an old guy," at 65 years old. He spent 20 years, 5 months, and 3 days in the U.S. Navy, and began racing after his military retirement. Larry opened Fabulous Firebirds in 1990 and supplied the hobby with parts and accessories for 17 years. Though Fabulous Firebirds is now owned by Robert McNeil, Larry plans to continue racing under the company's banner. He purchased his race car in 1997 and says, "I can't begin to tell you how many modifications I've made over the years." Larry also enjoys helping organizations in his community such as the Drag Racing Association of Women (DRAW) and the Board of Health in Madison County, Missouri. He has been the Midwest Pontiac Outlaw Race Association contact person since the mid-'90s. Conclusion The lesson learned from VMP is that a diverse group of Pontiac hobbyists can have a great time at the track, while providing valuable data to aid HPP readers in building their own projects. Duke Jefferson Duke and his... Duke Jefferson Duke and his '69 Bird got better and better as the day moved forward, thanks to increasing jet size and launch rpm. He recalls, "The track was good, but the air was not." The best pass was his sixth, posting 10.81 at 120.71 on a 1.42 60-ft time. Of the shootout and the event, Jefferson says, "Have me in more of them. They could not have done it any better." Zachary Edwards Zach experimented... Zachary Edwards Zach experimented with different tire pressures throughout the day, but ran the same tune. It paid off in the mid-afternoon. His best time was on his eighth of nine total passes, 11.91 at 114.87 on a 1.66 60-ft time. He says, "My GTO hooked well and it was one of my best experiences at a track. The surface was excellent; very sticky." Zachary describes the Shootout as "good track prep, good coordination, good atmosphere." Billy Farrell Billy used... Billy Farrell Billy used engine timing and tire pressure to find his best attack. His '84 T/A ran consistently, varying only 0.2 second all day. His best pass was his fourth, turning a 10.89 at 122.24 on a 1.45 60-ft time. Billy says, "My car hooked up well and went straight. It was a nice track." He also enjoyed the Shootout. "I was able to make passes, change things, and have a great time testing and tuning." Larry Cooper Larry amazed... Larry Cooper Larry amazed the crowd with trap speeds consistently exceeding 150 mph in his '71 Firebird. His tuning consisted of varying his tire pressure between 7 and 8.5 psi while working with a tried-and-true engine combo. His best pass was his second of the day, an 8.92 at 151.49 mph on a 1.30 60-ft time. Larry says, "The track was awesome, it was prepared very well, and everybody was so friendly." Regarding the shootout Larry says, "It was a stellar Pontiac event and we had a fabulous time!" Duke Jefferson showed us that a Pontiac doesn't need to have a million-dollar paint job to give its owner the best time of his life. His '69 Firebird was built to go fast, and that's exactly what it did. Duke's friendliness and great attitude can get him invited to any track. Zachary Edwards showed us that the new GTO contingent is as Poncho-passionate as the traditionalists are, and can proudly carry the Pontiac torch. He has been racing for only two years, but came to the track with a great attitude, excellent racing skills and a head/cam package on his GTO that made it a worthy contender against the traditional Pontiacs. Billy Farrell showed us that drag racing is a wholesome sport and can be a great life experience for its owner. He built his '84 T/A entirely by himself, learning as he went along. It was great to see a self-taught racer/builder who takes the time to give his passion back to the hobby. Larry Cooper proved that you are never too old to go fast, especially when there is a big-inch alcohol-fueled Pontiac motor in your Firebird. Larry's team was top-notch and was an inspiration for the other racers. Stay tuned for Part II next month. HPP would like to thank Jim Zeek, Chief Pontiac Productions and the management and crew of Virginia Motorsports Park for their assistance in making this shootout possible.
