Conclusion
All the participants enjoyed themselves. Traction was good for some and poor for others. Regardless, as evidenced by John Glasgo's e.t./mph comparison of his GTO with a R/A-V, big cam, big gears, and slicks to the way it's outfitted now with the R/A-IV, less cam, less gear, and redlines, you can see how potent these Pure Stockers really are. You can also see how far Pontiac racing has advanced since even the '90s.
HPP would like to thank Mark Weymouth, Dan Jensen, Jody Traylor, and the management and crew of Mid-Michigan Motorplex for their assistance in making this Shootout possible.
Chuck Lombardi
Chuck tells HPP, "The event was casual, stress-free, well-organized and allowed an amateur racer to try different things that may increase the performance of his vehicle." Of the track, he says, "The conditions were some of the best I have seen at Stanton. I was able to launch the Formula harder than usual. The surface seemed to be consistent throughout the entire strip." After dialing tire pressure and launch rpm and reducing timing by 2 degrees, Chuck made his best pass of the day, posting a 12.64 e.t. at 112.35 mph on a 1.69 short time. The SD went through the traps at 5,200 rpm in Fourth gear. Chuck's idea for future Shootouts: "Have a mobile chassis dyno at the track or a representative from a chassis/tune shop to help the participants tune."
Larry Weymouth
Regarding the starting line conditions, Larry says, "Traction was very good. My T/A hooked well and went straight." After adjusting the tire pressure and clamping the rear springs for the third pass, Larry was rewarded with his best e.t. of the day, a 13.15 at 105.06 on a 1.96 60-ft time. The T/A went through the traps at 4,500 rpm in high gear. Larry characterizes the event as having "great cars, great people, and a great magazine."
John Glasgo
"Track conditions were spotty," John says. "My '69 GTO spun hard consistently in Second gear." After adjusting the secondary air door, changing to CC rods and, despite still spinning on the 1-2 shift, John posted his best e.t. and trap speed of the day with a 12.78 at 111.89 with a 2.04 60-ft. The Goat went through the traps in high gear at 6,000 rpm. John says it was an honor to participate in the Shootout and that, "It was a lot of fun with a relaxed attitude and plenty of track time."
