The car is special to him because he and his dad built it together. Arnie converted his Tempest into a GTO clone in 1977 and was able to still buy all N.O.S. parts new from Pontiac to make the conversion. "The N.O.S. front bumper cost me $75, and the N.O.S. GTO hood cost me $100," he says. His father was a big influence on him, having powered a '56 F-100 truck with a Pontiac 370 and a '57 T-bird with a Pontiac 428. Arnie followed the family tradition by putting a 455/462 into a '79 F-150 and a 455 into a '55 F-250. "In addition to Pontiac musclecars, we like Pontiac engines in Ford bodies," Arnie says. | Strip Specs | | Year/Model | '67 Tempest | | Race Weight With Driver | 3,740 lbs | | Curb Weight | 3,595 lbs | | Fuel Level When Weighed | ½-tank | | Fuel | 112-octane | | Engine | '70 WS-code Ram Air III 400 | | Cubic Inches Before/After | 400/400 | | Engine Built By | Frank Hanzes | | Power-Adder | None | | Induction System | | Air Cleaner | K&N | | Carburetor | Rochester '66 Tri-Power | | Jets | 0.068/0.070/0.068 | | Spacer Plate | 5/8-in Mycarta, homemade | | Intake Manifold | '66 aluminum Tri-Power, ported, welded crossover | | Fuel System | | Pump | Holley Black 140-gph | | Lines | 3/8-in | | Regulator | Holley set at 9 psi | | Heads | | Casting | '70 No. 12 | | Head Porting | Rick Garden | | Flow Numbers | N/A | | Valves | 2.11/1.77-in Ferrea stainless steel | | Bottom End | | Pistons | TRW forged, dome | | Rings | Sealed Power, 1/16-in, 1/16-in, 3/16-in | | Rods | Stock, 6.625-in | | Compression Ratio | 12.0:1 | | Crankshaft | Pontiac "N" cast crank, 3.75-in stroke | | Rotating Assembly Balanced | N/A | | Camshaft | | Brand | Ultradyne hydraulic | | Duration at 0.050 | 239/239-deg | | Duration Advertised | 296/296-deg | | Lift With Specified Rocker Arms | 0.507/0.507-in | | Lobe Separation Angle | 110-deg | | Installed Position | Straight up | | Rocker Arms | Harland Sharp 1.5:1-ratio roller | | Ignition | | Distributor | MSD Pro Billet | | Amplifier | MSD 6AL | | Coil | MSD Blaster 2 | | Wires | MSD 8.5mm | | Spark Plugs | Autolite AR 73 | | Total Timing | 35-deg | | RPM That Total Timing Is Reached | 2,800 | | Exhaust | | Headers | Hooker, Jet Hot-coated | | Primaries | 1.625-in | | Collectors | 3.00-in | | Exhaust Pipes | None | | Mufflers | None | | Crossover | None | | Drivetrain | | Transmission | Turbo 350, street/strip shift kit, TCI sprag | | Converter | 11-in B&M, 3,000-rpm stall | | Shifter | Hurst Quarter Sticknbsp | | Rear | GM 12-bolt | | Rear Gear Ratio | 4.10:1 | | Posi | Strange | | Axles | Strange, 30-spline, welded axle tubes | | Chassis and Suspension | | Brakes F/R | Disc/Drum | | Wheels F/R | Radir Tri-Ribb 14x7/15x8 | | Tires F/R | BFG P225/70R14 / Hoosier 28x10x15 slicks | | Tire Pressure F/R | 45 psi/15 psi | | Suspension Front: | | Springs | Moog, cut | | Control Arms | Stock | | Stabilizer Bar | Removed | | Shocks | Summit 90-10 | | Suspension Rear: | | Springs | Stock | | Control Arms | Southside Machine | | Shocks | Competition Engineering | | Stabilizer Bar | 0.875-in | | Other Features | None | | Chassis Mods | 8-point rollbar | | The Rest | | Interior Mods | '65 GTO seats, '66 GTO dash | | Exterior Mods | '67 GTO hood, grilles, and bright trim | | Safety Mods | SFI-approved drivetrain parts, driveshaft safety loop, C-clip eliminator, TCI flywheel | | Color | Torch Red | | Launch Technique | Footbrake off idle | | Best 1/8-mile E.T./MPH Prior to Event | 7.35/92.21 | | Best 1/4-mile E.T./MPH Prior to Event | 12.25/108 |
