Pontiac Pavement Pounders Shootout SoCal Edition, Part I
Owner Bio: Dennis "D-Mac" MacDonald If you've been following the Pontiac drag racing scene for any length of time, you've no doubt heard of Dennis "D-Mac" MacDonald, from Escondido, California. He has been carrying the torch for Pontiac performance since he moved to California in 1959, and he has become one of SoCal's quickest and most competitive Pontiac racers. Dennis' tube-framed Catalina is one of those cars that attracts loads of attention, both from its wild paint scheme and its jaw-dropping performance. "People come over to the car and say, 'I can't believe this big car can haul ass, and with a Pontiac engine!'" Dennis says he "patterned it after the '62 SD cars, which were big cars that did what you would not believe." A testament to its fantastic engineering and execution, Dennis and his Cat have also won a variety of race and show awards all over the country. In addition to his tube-framed Cat, D-Mac also has an 8.7-second, tube-framed '64 GTO that was damaged in a dragstrip crash at Norwalk a few years back. It's being repaired, and he owns a '61 Ventura with a 428 that has run a 12.01 at 119 mph, weighing 4,100 pounds. | Strip Specs | | Year/Model: | '62 Catalina | | Race Weight: | 2,915 lbs | | Curb Weight: | 2,715 lbs | | Engine: | '72 455 block | | Cubic Inches Before/After Bore: | 455/474 | | Compression Ratio: | 14.6:1 | | Built By: | RSB Motorsports | | Fuel: | Methanol | | Fuel Injection: | Ron's Flying Toilet, 3.75-in throttle body | | Intake Manifold: | Edelbrock Victor | | Fuel Pump: | Ron's Racing Gold Billet vane-type, 100 gph at 100 psi | | Heads: | Edelbrock 72 cc | | Head Porting: | Yes, 330-cfm intake | | Valves: | 2.19/1.77 Manley stainless steel, designed for Alcohol use | | Pistons/Rings: | CP domed 4.211-in/CP moly | | Rods: | Oliver billet | | Crankshaft: | RSB Motorsports billet, 4.25-in stroke | | Rotating Assembly Balanced: | Yes | | Camshaft: | Bullet solid roller, duration N/A, lift 0.620/0.620 with T&D 1.5:1 shaft-mounted rockers | | Installed Position: | Advanced 2 deg | | Ignition System: | MSD crank trigger with BOP beltdrive | | Total Timing: | 34 deg at 2,200 rpm | | Exhaust: | Custom headers by D-Mac's Automotive, 1.875-in primaries, 4-in collectors | | Power Adder: | None | | Converter: | Continental 9-in, 4,300-stall | | Transmission: | Turbo 400 by Hubbe, custom valvebody, transbrake, Hurst Shifter | | Rear: | Fab-9 9-in, 4.10 gears, spool | | Brakes Front/Rear: | Wilwood four-wheel disc | | Wheels/Tires Front: | 15x3.5 Pro Star/28x4.5x15 Moroso Front Runners | | Wheels/Tires Rear: | 15x15 Pro Star/32x16x15 Goodyear slick | | Tire Pressure Front/Rear: | 35 psi/7 psi | | Suspension Front: | Chris Alston A-arm with Aldan shocks | | Suspension Rear: | Chris Alston Eliminator II four-link with sway/torsion bar, Afco double-adjustable shocks | | Chassis Modifications: | Complete tube frame by Race Cars & Stuff, 2x3-in main rails, 16-point Funny Car rollcage made of 1.625x0.125-in wall D.O.M. tubing | | Interior Modifications: | Complete aluminum interior by Race Cars & Stuff | | Exterior Modifications: | Steel roof and quarters with fiberglass front end, bumpers, doors, and decklid by Race Cars & Stuff, custom paint by MartyZee | | Safety Modifications: | Funny Car rollcage, five-point harness, two driveshaft loops, front and rear g-force harnesses | | Custom Computer Programming: | MSD 7AL2 with MSD digital rpm control, Dedenbear crossover delay system | | Launch Technique: | Set delay box at 1.03, first yellow, let it go and floor it, leave at 4,300 rpm | | Best ET/MPH Prior to Event (1/4-Mile): | 8.92 at 151.60 mph |
