Pontiac Pavement Pounders Shootout SoCal Edition, Part IV
OWNER BIO: David McGarry Dave McGarry's quick smile and laid-back demeanor belie the fact that he is a perfectionist. His '63 Tempest is a rolling testament to his striving for quality, and unlike most Pro-Streeters, this one is no poseur--it can definitely walk the walk. "I was inspired to build a '63 from both Arnie 'The Farmer' Beswick and Mike Cooper," Dave says. "This was the car that Pontiac used to decide they would produce the GTO in 1964." At 59, Dave lives in Ventura, California. He has been racing on and off for over 20 years and has had Pontiacs even longer than that. "I bought a used '65 GTO when I got out of the army in late 1967, and I never looked back," he says. "I have owned Pontiacs ever since." Dave has also built a beautiful 455-powered '41 Sport Coupe street rod and owns a '72 Grand Prix SJ. | Strip Specs | | Year/Model: | '63 Tempest | | Race Weight: | 3,755 lbs | | Curb Weight: | 3,560 lbs | | Engine: | '73 455 code ZC | | Cubic Inches Before/After: | 455 / 468 | | Compression Ratio: | 9.65:1 | | Built By: | Dave Bisschop SD Performance | | Fuel: | 91 octane | | Carburetor: | 850 Holley | | Jets: | No. 78 / No. 84 | | Spacer Plate: | 1-in birch | | Intake Manifold: | Warrior | | Fuel System: | Mallory 140 gph pump, 0.5-in send and return lines, Barry Grant regulator | | Heads: | 6X-4 | | Head Porting: | Yes, 275-cfm intake | | Valves: | 2.125/1.71-in Ferrea | | Pistons: | Ross forged, 4.21-in bore (455 + 0.060) | | Rings: | Total Seal | | Rods: | Eagle forged, stock length | | Crankshaft: | Stock 455 nodular iron | | Rotating Assembly Balanced: | Yes | | Camshaft: | Ultradyne flat-tappet with 263/271-deg duration, 0.556-in lift with 1.5:1 Crane roller rockers, 110-deg LSA | | Camshaft Installed Position: | Straight up | | Ignition: | Crane HI-6 Electronic with Mallory Comp 9000 and Crane coil | | Total Timing: | 34 deg at 2,000 rpm | | Exhaust: | Hooker Super Comp headers, 1.75-in primaries, 3.5-in collectors, 3-in crossover, 3-in MagnaFlow mufflers, 2.5-in tailpipes | | Power Adder: | None | | Torque Converter: | Custom Continental 10-in, 2,000-stall speed | | Transmission: | 200-4R with manual valvebody | | Shifter: | Hurst | | Rearend/Final Drive: | Narrowed 9-in Ford with 3.90 gears and Traction-Lok | | Brakes Front: | Wilwood discs | | Brakes Rear: | Lincoln Versailles discs | | Wheels/Tires Front: | Weld Pro Star 15x5-in / M/T 26x7.5x15-in | | Wheels/Tires Rear: | Weld Pro Star 15x15-in / M/T 29x18.5x15-in | | Tire Pressure Front/Rear: | 40 psi / 12 psi | | Suspension Front: | Chris Alston Mustang II, tubular control arms, QA1 coilover shocks, rack-and-pinion steering | | Suspension Rear: | Chris Alston ladder bars, Panhard rod, coilover shocks | | Chassis Modifications: | Full tube frame and 12-point cage, tubbed rear, engine set back 10 in, new floor and tunnel | | Interior Modifications: | Full Auto Meter instrumentation, Fiero bucket seats, Pioneer four-speaker stereo, Grant wheel | | Exterior Modifications: | Harwood hoodscoop, exhaust radius in rear valance, shaved emblems, power antenna in rear quarter | | Safety Modifications: | Driveshaft loop, trans shield, Simpson seat belts, kill switch | | Custom Computer Programming: | None | | Launch Technique: | Launch at idle, 1,000 rpm, nail it! | | Best ET/MPH Prior to Event (1/4 Mile): | 11.53 at 120 mph | | Best ET/MPH Prior to Event (1/8 Mile): | 7.40 at 94 mph | | STRIP TUNING LOG | | Run | Tuning | Launch RPM | Shift Point | 60-FT | 1/8-Mile ET/MPH | 1/4 E.T./MPH | Corrected 1/4-Mile | | 1. | 34 deg total, Slicks at 12 psi | 1,000 | 5,400 | 1.80 | 7.68/91.22 | 11.99/114.28 | 11.60/118.13 | | 2. | Same | 1,000 | 5,600 | 1.70 | 7.54/91.61 | 11.84/114.36 | 11.45/118.21 | | 3. | Same | 1,000 | 5,800 | 2.54 | 8.55/90.45 | 12.92/113.82 | 12.50/117.66 | | 4. | Same | 1,000 | 6,000 | 1.71 | 7.57/91.71 | 11.87/114.46 | 11.48/118.31 | | 5. | Same | 1,000 | 6,000 | 1.72 | 7.57/91.73 | 11.87/114.47 | 11.48/118.32 | | Run: 1) Spun tires a little; 2) Raised shift point; 3) Car bogged big time; 4) Same as shifting at 5,600; 5) Same |
