Pontiac Pavement Pounders Shootout SoCal Edition, Part IV
OWNER BIO: Jerry "The Judge" Young If you've been racing in Southern California for the last say, half a century, you've probably run into San Bernadino's own Jerry "The Judge" Young. The 68-year-old has been racing Pontiacs since the first V-8s came out, and he was one of Pontiac's "Special Projects" racers in the late '60s. Jerry has built a number of race cars, but the '64 GTO he has now is one of his favorites. "I feel the '64 is special because it's the first year for the GTO," he says. Being able to run deep into the 11s makes this Goat a favorite in anyone's book! | Strip Specs | | Year/Model: | '64 GTO | | Race Weight: | 3,420 lbs | | Curb Weight: | 3,210 lbs | | Engine: | 455 | | Cubic Inches Before/After: | 455/462 | | Compression Ratio: | 13.0:1 | | Built By: | Owner | | Fuel: | C-12 VP | | Carburetor: | Demon 850 | | Jets: | No. 85 primary/No. 89 secondary | | Spacer Plate: | Edelbrock 1-in | | Intake Manifold: | Edelbrock Torker II | | Fuel System: | Holley 250 fuel pump, 0.5-in aluminum lines from tank to Holley regulator set at 8 psi, 0.5-in aluminum return line | | Heads: | '67 No. 670 | | Head Porting: | Yes, 285-cfm intake, 210-cfm exhaust | | Valves: | 2.12/1.77 Manley stainless | | Pistons: | Ross forged, 4.181 bore (455 + 0.030) | | Rings: | Dykes top/Total Seal | | Rods: | Eagle forged, stock length | | Crankshaft: | Stock nodular iron | | Rotating Assembly Balanced: | Yes | | Camshaft: | Comp Cams flat-tappet with 290/308-deg duration advertised, 0.565-in lift with 1.5:1 Harland Sharp roller rockers, 102-deg lobe centerline | | Camshaft Installed Position: | Advanced 4 deg | | Ignition: | GM HEI with MSD 6AL | | Total Timing: | 36 deg at 2,000 rpm | | Exhaust: | Doug's Headers 1.875-in primaries, 3.5-in collectors | | Power Adder: | None | | Torque Converter: | TCI 10-in, 3,800-stall speed | | Transmission: | Turbo 400, manual reverse valvebody, transbrake | | Shifter: | B&M | | Rearend/Final Drive: | GM 12-bolt 4.10 gears, posi | | Brakes Front: | Wilwood disc | | Brakes Rear: | Stock 9.5-in drums | | Wheels/Tires Front: | Weld 15x4-in/Goodyear 28x4.5x15 | | Wheels/Tires Rear: | Weld 15x10-in/M/T 28x12.5 slicks | | Tire Pressure Front/Rear: | 35 psi/13 psi | | Suspension Front: | Stock | | Suspension Rear: | Stock | | Chassis Modifications: | Six-point CM rollbar, tied into stock rear suspension mounts | | Interior Modifications: | Stock, except rear seat removed | | Exterior Modifications: | VFN Fiberglass hood | | Safety Modifications: | Rollbar and driveshaft loop | | Custom Computer Programming: | None | | Launch Technique: | Transbrake shallow stage, 3,600 rpm | | Best ET/MPH Prior to Event (1/4 Mile): | 11.39 at 4,000-ft elevation | | STRIP TUNING LOG | | Run | Tuning | Launch RPM | Shift Point | 60-FT | ET/MPH 1/8-Mile | 1/4 E.T./MPH | Corrected 1/4-Mile | | 1. | Slicks 13.5 psi, 36 deg timing | 3,600 | 5,800 | 1.59 | 7.25/94.07 | 11.43/117.24 | 11.06/121.19 | | 2. | Slicks 13 psi | 4,000 | 6,000 | 1.60 | 7.31/94.69 | 11.46/117.63 | 11.09/121.59 | | 3. | Slicks 12.5 psi | 4,000 | 5,500 | 1.64 | 7.33/94.41 | 11.48117.56 | 11.11/121.52 | | 4. | Slicks 13 psi | 3,800 | 6,000 | 1.69 | 7.42/NR | 11.60/117.26 | 11.22/121.21 | | 5. | Same | 4,000 | 5,800 | 1.66 | 7.45/93.30 | 11.65/116.77 | 11.27/120.70 | | Run: 1) Good pass for altitude and air.
