Since then, testing of an engine's drain oil has become the standard operating procedure for trucking fleets, marine vessels, locomotives, agricultural and earth movers, or any other industry that depends on the internal health of an engine to make a living. Ignored by most enthusiasts, a $12 oil test can reveal internal wear, fuel dilution, water or anti-freeze contamination, and oil viscosity. For the test to be accurate, the engine would need to run with the oil to be tested for some time, and a history should be established to predict wear. But, when purchasing a used engine or Pontiac, an inexpensive test by Analysts Inc. is certainly a worthwhile investment. They provide a print-out within 24 hours of receiving the sample.
