1992 Pontiac Trans Am GTA Front Driver Side View
This ultra-rare '92 GTA belongs to Gary Whitby from St. Catherines, Ontario. It has an aftermarket Ram Air hood, Borla cat-back exhaust, Eibach Sportline springs, SLP bushings, panhard bar and lower control arms, along with a custom strut brace to keep up with our other players in the turns. But we care about what's under the hood for this installment.

Among Bill Danyluk's underhood upgrades are, a K&N Filter, a set of March pulleys, Hooker jet coated headers, ACCEL coil, 8.8mm wires and Bosch Platinum Plugs.

Whether your Third-Gen has a stick or slush box, there are few notable improvements you can do in the transmission department. On manual trannys (mostly Borg Warner T-5s), first on your list should be an upgraded clutch because after a few burnouts the weak stocker will soon perish. Centerforce's dual-friction clutches (centerforce.com 928-771-8422) seem to be up to the job and offer a good and not overtly stiff pedal feel. Another upgrade item for a stick car should be the shifter. Even when these Pontiacs were new, many testers complained about the balky factory shifter mechanism and among enthusiasts, a Hurst Competition Plus replacement shifter (See Mr. Gasket) is a popular choice.

  • SLP intake plenum air foil
  • Throttle body coolant bypass
  • ACCEL 8.8mm wires, cap and rotor and Super Coil for HEI
  • Bosch +4 platinum plugs
  • Reproduction Fourth-Gen '96-97 SLP/WS6 Trans Am Ram Air hood by American Sports Car Design (ASCD); Hood has been modified to be functional (inner liner has been cut for Ram Air effect--definitely makes a difference with air filter and box)
  • K&N conical filter made specifically for TPI applications at throttle body with a custom air box
  • Borla Pro-Xcess stainless 3-inch muffler with 3-inch modified intermediate pipe, single outlet set-up (for now)
  • 160 degree thermostat

  • K&N filter
  • Air foil
  • Ported stock intake plenum
  • Throttle body coolant bypass (recommended)
  • Wells high-flow MAF sensor
  • March underdrive pulleys
  • MSD 6AL distributor, coil and 8.5mm wires
  • Edlebrock shorty headers
  • 3-inch Magnaflow cat-back exhaust
  • Adjustable fuel pressure regulator
  • E-PROM chip (custom programmed by me)
  • 160 degree thermostat
  • Auxiliary fan control switch
  • 2,400 stall converter (it really launches hard now!)
  • Torque converter lock-up switch
  • Shift kit
  • Tranny cooler

  • Home-made cold-air system
  • Added pulleys
  • Ignition, Jacobs Ultra Team

  • Vented hood scoop with screen (really removes hot air and lets in no water when washed, my own design)
  • SLP cold air box (relocated fuel canister to inside of front nose for room to fit)
  • K&N air filter
  • Modified MAF sensor screens removed (done 6 years ago and have had no problems with MAF)
  • MAF relocation sensor from TPIS
  • Throttle body airfoil from TPIS
  • Ported plenum (done myself)
  • Throttle body coolant bypass (my own setup)
  • Adjustable fuel pressure regulator set at 50 psi
  • ACCEL 8.8mm wires, distributor cap and Super Coil #14009--48,000 volt
  • Bosch platinum plugs gapped at .054 while stock is .035 (The ignition upgrades work well together with fast starts and a good burn as shown by my low emissions results during testing last year)
  • Aluminum March three-piece underdrive pulleys (only problem was with the alternator pulley. I had to cut down diameter at work because the car had low charge at idle)
  • Hooker Jet-Hot coated headers with emissions tubes
  • Hi-flow cat converter
  • True 3-inch cat back stainless steel pipe-- custom from Alloy Options
  • Magnaflow 3-inch muffler
  • Performance Research E-PROM chip (bought in 1989, very noticeable difference as during warranty work had to take it out several times--good buy)
  • 160 degree thermostat (keeps engine cool and still have good heat)
  • Fan switch of my own design (I can run one or two fans per weather conditions with a rocker switch. It goes well with 160 degreee thermostat)
  • Trans-Go tranny shift kit (excellent mod for firm shifts)
  • Torque converter delay lockup plug inline unit (good mod)
  • B&M ratchet Mega Shifter (I redesigned the set up myself to make it lower and more forward)
