Here's the location of secondary application stamp found on all '73-up cylinder heads. Early cast heads were stamped with a single digit, while later heads were stamped with single digit followed by the letter "H". The stampings identified different applications of heads with the same casting number.

Paired stud bosses and pressed-in rocker studs were found on nearly all pre-mid-'73 heads. Material between the stud bosses was drilled and tapped and bolts were used to retain pushrod guide plates. Extra material was eliminated in 1974 to reduce material costs.

Here is an early cast head stamped with a single digit "4". This head has a casting date of September 18, 1972 and was originally installed on a 400 2-barrel engine. It has pressed-in rocker studs and small intake valves.

This is how the casting date code appears on all 4X heads. K212 shows this head being cast November 21, 1972. Heads with pressed-in rocker studs started being converted to threaded studs in March 1973 and by mid-April, all heads had been converted.
