Possibly because there are few who can actually do it and fewer still who can do it well, we are all enamored with a high-quality paint finish. Let’s face it, the beauty of the paint and the bodywork beneath it, or lack thereof, can make or break any project.
Though not many of us will have the opportunity to load up the paint gun and start spraying, it’s important to know how a great finish is achieved. This knowledge can help you choose a resto shop by asking specific questions, aid in discussions with your current resto shop, or at least let you know why the bill for labor and materials is higher than it would be for a basic respray.
To learn more, I spoke with HPP contributor Melvin Benzaquen, owner of Classic Restorations in Sloatsburg, New York (www.classicresto.com). What follows are not 14 basic tips on how to paint a car, but rather 14 additional or expanded steps and processes that—when combined with the basics—create a stellar paint finish. (This info is for one- and two-stage paint systems, not multi-stage candies and pearls.)
