14e. Adjust the thrust-bearing half with the lower reading on the dial indicator to match the one with the higher reading by removing material. Place 220-grit sandpaper on a flat, hard surface and sand the thrust surface of the bearing by applying even pressure to keep it flat. Check the clearance frequently. Once it’s very close, then sand it with 400-grit, and finally 600-grit to smooth the surface. Once the bearing halves are even—upper to lower front and upper to lower back—the crankshaft endplay can be measured. It should be between 0.006 and 0.008 with 0.010 max for a high-performance street engine. If the clearance is too tight, sand the thrust bearing (both halves equally) to get it correct.
