Wheelflares were intended to improve the Trans Am’s aerodynamic profile. Through ’78 they were constructed of ABS plastic, and in most instances, were molded in the appropriate exterior color. The rubber welting, which is also molded in color, conforms to the body shape and serves to eliminate any unsightly gaps. The flare assembly sometimes didn’t fit exceptionally well, but they do on this Trans Am. The flares are also trimmed in gold pinstripe on S/E models, and its shape mimics that of the flares.
