The Space-Saver spare tire became standard equipment on the Firebird in the mid ’70s, and it increased usable space by a few cubic feet when compared to a full-size spare. It was a welcome addition to owners who used their Firebird for daily transportation and needed the extra trunk space for personal belongings or cargo. While later units were pre-inflated, this particular unit was deflated to increase space. A separate inflator—the red canister shown beneath the jack plate—was used to inflate it for service. The characters imprinted onto the tire’s tread surface are production identifiers. The black objects in the trunk are the storage bags for the Hurst Hatches. The trunk mat was included with Y90 Custom Trim option. Sharp eyes may notice that the gold pinstripe that accents the deck lid extends into the trunk jamb area. It’s already lifting away and a piece may already be torn away.
