Airing It Out

For professional-looking, symmetrical results on the RH and LH sides of the frame, Vogt whipped up this neat cardboard template. Note how the upper edge is contoured to follow the line of the frame. This important detail allows the template to be used to mark the passenger side of the frame as well.

A pneumatic cutoff wheel makes quick work of the offending metal.

Here are the sections of frame that were removed.

The new lower frame contour follows the cardboard template. With the measuring work done, the spring pocket on the other side of the frame can quickly be prepared for the airspring by simply transferring the template, marking the offending metal and trimming.

The air suspension kit comes complete with all required parts and fasteners as well as these fabricated StrongArm tubular lower control arms that feature urethane bushings, heavy-duty ball joints, and gusseted construction for maximum strength. Air Ride Technologies has redesigned the control arm geometry to eliminate any bind at full suspension travel and to add 2 degrees of caster to improve high-speed stability.

Here's a look inside the modified spring pocket. The coil spring centering ring is visible and does not need to be removed. Billet-aluminum upper mounts of the ShockWave units pass through the ring and seat directly against the frame.

Unlike coil springs, which must be compressed and trapped during installation, the preassembled ShockWave units simply bolt in place. Note the quality craftsmanship. The bladders for the suspension incorporate integral, adjustable shock absorbers that are rebuildable.

With the bladder and StrongArm lower arm mocked up, the modified frame provides ample clearance. A finger width is required between the inflatable rubber bladders and any nearby surface.

The kit's StrongArm upper control arms also feature urethane bushings, heavy-duty ball joints, and have stock GM geometry. Unlike stamped-steel GM parts, these hefty arms resist deflection for improved handling.

At the rear of the frame, the air suspension kit also includes heavy-duty upgrades for all suspension parts. The StrongArm lower control arms feature thick-wall tubing, high-durometer urethane bushings, and are sleeved to accept stock and aftermarket rear stabilizer bars.

StrongArm upper control arms are equally tough. These rigid links don't deflect, and they do a superior job of locating the axle for hop-free, full throttle launches and improved handling.
