Started in the '30s in a small garage in Beverly Hills, Edelbrock is one of the most storied names in the performance industry. Edelbrock offers 50-state legal shorty headers as well as the after-cat systems. The company's Web site lists either aluminized or 304 stainless tubing for its systems, but we didn't find any stainless systems being sold elsewhere, so no price is provided. Mufflers are Ti-Tech coated or 304 stainless steel, and all exit pipes are 304 stainless with polished ends. Each system features its new SDT (sound deflection technology) mufflers, which use chambers and shaped sound reflectors to reduce noise without packing. Edelbrock doesn't sell online, but all of its products can be ordered through the giant Checker/Shucks/Kragen or Autozone stores, or from Jegs or Summit online.

Complete from the catalytic converter to the tailpipe, Edelbrock #5729 for '04 GTOs includes the new SDT mufflers, an x-style crossover, and is a complete, dyno-tuned system. Made from 17-gauge 409 stainless tubing, the 211/42-inch diameter and mandrel bends offer improved flow. All Edelbrock after-cat systems replace O.E. exhaust systems and are street legal in all 50 states.

The Flowmaster American Thunder Exhaust System is a well established product line, but the company also offers the Force II, a quieter, lower-cost option, for many applications. Flowmaster provides a large number of muffler options, 15 systems were listed for the '85-'02 Firebirds, however, they were listed under the Chevy section, not the Pontiac section. All Flowmasters are aluminized steel and offer the company's notorious Chambered mufflers, which use solid sound deflectors and traps without the muffler packing that can blow out or degrade. Flowmasters are known for being boisterous and resonant, making them a favorite amongst hobbyists, but we haven't experienced the new Force II systems. Expect them to have a mellower sound. The company does sell directly from its Web site, and the site has sound clips for the different mufflers under Features.

The GMMG unit shows the absolute minimum of mufflers used on these systems. You won't be sneaking up on anyone with a GMMG exhaust.

GMMG does special builds or tuner cars, such as the Carl Black Pontiac Blackbird and Berger SS Camaros. The only component the company seems to sell is its chambered '82-and-up F-body exhaust. Since the Web site is more focused on the company's tuner cars, you need to look for the exhaust system. The quality and attention to detail on GMMG tuner cars is impressive, and several message board members who have purchased these systems are very happy with them. GMMG provides photos as well as four video clips, and was the only company with the 'stones to show its system on a car, almost disappearing in a haze of tire smoke and slapping the rev limiter all the way down the street. The exhaust systems can be ordered through e-mail on the Web site.

Hedman only makes one after-cat...
Hedman only makes one after-cat exhaust for Pontiacs, and it's designed to bolt directly to the Hedman 68534 long-tube headers, technically eliminating the catalytic converters completely. However, we thought it was significant enough to include for true performance nuts.

Hedman only makes one system and only for the LS1 Firebirds, but it's an important inclusion for Pontiac owners who compete in closed course events (or those who aren't subjected to smog inspections). The 13200 C.B. system is designed to work in conjunction with Hedman's 68534 long-tube headers only. As you can see from the photo, if this system bolts directly to the header flanges, it represents a full exhaust system but has no catalytic converters. Although a properly tuned modern engine can pass most smog test requirements without the catalytic converters, we don't recommend this for use in a state with smog inspections. Coupled with the Hedman long-tube headers, this is a great racing system, especially for a modified engine, but use it at your own smog-legal peril.
