After beginning to feel preload on the bearing, an inch-pound torque wrench was used to measure the preload both clockwise and counter-clockwise, shooting for 20-25 inch-pounds. After initially determining a preload of 16 inch-pounds, the pinion nut was tightened again and rechecked. This time the reading came in at 25 inch-pounds, which is right in the middle of the 15-35 inch-pound specification for new pinion-bearing preload.
