Ignition System Ignition Coil
Until the introduction of GM HEI, Pontiac used a cylindrical oil-filled ignition coil. The oil was used as a coolant. Later designs employed an E-core coil, "E" for epoxy. A special material replaced the oil as a heat sink. Ignition-coil polarity is very important. If the primary side of the coil is connected backwards, the spark plug will fire from the side electrode to the center electrode and will have diminished output. The engine will run rough, misfire, and exhibit poor performance overall.

Ignition System Direction Ignition System
Pontiacs with direction-ignition system (DIS) offer higher potential energy output since each coil only needs to fire two spark plugs, not all of them. This allows for a longer dwell (saturation) period.
