Serving Up Performance In A New Tray
Oftentimes hobbyists question whether they should add a windage tray to the bottom end of their Pontiac engine. Its purpose is to keep oil off the crankshaft by reducing the aeration generated by continual crank rotation. The general consensus is that in specific applications, installing one can add around 10 hp over a similar engine without one. Pontiac used them in the early years but quit installing them when horsepower levels began to decline during the mid-'70s. Because they were prone to cracking, finding an issue-free used unit can sometimes be difficult, forcing some hobbyists to go without.
Pacific Performance Racing has just made freeing up those potential ponies a little easier. The company has just released its newest item, the Tomahawk windage tray. Constructed of 17-gauge hardened steel, the Tomahawk unit is similar to the later factory units that cover four of five main caps. It installs like the original but has one distinct advantage; several additional drain holes for improved oil return without compromising integrity. The new cadmium-plated tray retails for $79.95. Cam It Up
Admit it. In a pinch, you've threaded a long bolt into the front snout of a camshaft in an attempt to make installation easier and prevent cam-bearing damage. But because of its size, a bolt doesn't offer much control when trying to carefully align the journals during installation. Proform has a tool to make the job even simpler: this new universal camshaft installation handle (PN 66898).
According to Proform, "The latest addition to the Proform line of engine-assembly tools, this easy to use camshaft tool works for most domestic V-6 and V-8 engines" as a result of the five adaptors engineered for use with the handle. "Using this tool provides a better balance and firmer grip, helping to eliminate dings or scratches on the cam bearings," says Proform. "The tool grip is made of flexible material to provide comfort during installation but still offer plenty of support for the cam." Retail price is around $40.
