A Word On Paint Blending
It's a fact that some colors fade faster than others. Even if the new paint is mixed perfectly, once the freshly painted body part is on the car and next to the surrounding factory painted parts, the color may not match. Not all is lost, though. If your paint isn't too far gone, you have the option of blending the paint into the fenders, headlight, doors and nose. John has blended many body panels in his 30 years of body work experience. He highly suggests this procedure be done by a professional painter, since every color is different.
You start out by either wet-sanding part of the surrounding fenders or body parts with 1,000-grit sandpaper or use Scuff-It. John creates a mixture of clear and basecoat paint. This new liquid is translucent, but holds the new, nonfaded color inside. He tapes off the surrounding fenders until the last coat is sprayed on the hood, removes the tape, and mists over the hood and fenders with the mixture. He finishes up with a final application of clearcoat over the entire area. The result is a subtle and gradual blend that's hard to notice and doesn't make the new hood stand out like a sore thumb.

The hinges are held in place with 13mm nuts and bolts, on which we used two wrenches. Then we took the hood off and set it aside.

Next, we completely lowered the adjustable stoppers. When the new hood is installed, we can raise them until the hood sits flush with the tops of the fenders.

Just like the hood striker, the hinges have alignment tabs. These are made from soft metal and we easily folded them over as shown. (There is also a chance you may need to modify the holes to allow for more adjustment.) Once done, they can be installed on the new hood.

We installed the new hood without either of the struts or the striker and safety release. Next is the trickiest part of the project; it requires extensive trial and error to align the hood properly. Both sides of the hood should have a consistent gap to each fender. However, it must also line up correctly with the nose and headlight doors.

Happily, the VFN hood is a quality piece that fit correctly. Even when we cycled the headlight doors, there was no interference.

The VFN hood came with new 11mm bolts to be used for the struts since the factory bolts won't fit. Once we aligned the hood, we reattached the struts.
