Pontiac 389 Engine Casting Number
The casting number and date indicate this is a late-production '64 389, which was cast during the July 2, 1964, night shift. The block code is 78X, making it an original four-barrel GTO engine, the one the car was built with.

Wiseco Piston
The Wiseco forgings fit a 4.10-inch bore size and feature a compression height of 1.295 inches, a nominal weight of 488 grams, and use a 0.990-inch pin. Sealed Power plasma-moly rings (1/16-, 1/16-, 3/16-inch, end gap is 0.004 per inch of bore) seal off the combustion pressure.

Pontiac 389 Engine Wiseco Pistons
The Wiseco forged pistons feature larger and deeper valve pockets (16cc dish volume) than normal, a desirable feature for Edelbrock heads, as the valves are moved out slightly. The piston design, combustion chamber volume, and Fel-Pro composite No. 8518 head gasket volume work together to provide a 10.3:1 compression ratio. Piston-to-deck height is zero and piston-to-wall clearance is 0.004 inch.

Pontiac 389 Engine Bottom End
The bottom end is nearly complete at this point. Installation of the Sealed Power high-volume oil pump, Milodon windage tray, and pan will follow. Why wasn't the bottom end converted to four-bolt main caps? The Webers felt it was unnecessary since it's primarily a street engine.

Pontiac 389 Engine Roller Grind
The lobe design of the hydraulic roller grind is clearly more aggressive than that of the typical flat-tappet. As such it will require HD valvetrain components and higher-pressure valvesprings.
