This is the back of the caliper looking down from the top. The large black structure in the middle is called the bridge, and like the caliper, it's made from aluminum. According to StopTech, the bridge is one of the most structurally important parts of its calipers. When heat and brake pressure is sent through the caliper, it will try to expand; the bridge reduces this flexing.
